Besides Kotaku, are there any other decent gaming news sites?

Other sites seem to be vapid affairs with an unhealthy symbiosis with publisher's PR that make me extremely cynical about 'gaming journalism'. In fact I'm not sure those two words belong together.

I don't believe Kotaku is free of those afflictions either -nor is it really generating much original content. It seems to be a constant struggle between maintaining access to publishers & ad revenue vs making objective assessments about games & the industry.

What are your thoughts on the matter? Where/how do you keep up-to-date on gaming news?

All gaming news is hype regardless of who spouts it anymore be it the devs, a dedicated gaming new site or some rabid fanboi on a forum. I wait till after a game has been released and use this site to get an indication of if it is any good and worth my hard earned pennys.

You make a fair point -most 'news' is hype carefully engineered by PR/marketing professionals.

But...if Blizzard announced a release date for Starcraft II or CCP discusses details on the WoD mmo I want to hear about it! Irrespective of whether it's part of the hype machine.

With regards to gamerankings.com, I will look at game reviews but I'm very wary of going by what's 'popular'. As a PC gamer who enjoys rts/rpg I've come to accept my tastes are not always going to rate highly on the popularity scale.

Thats why I like that site. Its a compendium of various unrelated review sites so I can weed out the emo, biased or incompetant reviewers and focus on the ones who like the games I like. Plus when you see a game that gets all top or crap scores regardless of the reviewing site its a pretty good indication of its merits or lack of.
