Also, Eve Online isn't an American game. In Iceland, simply uttering the word "******" can land you in jail. Further, even if Eve were an American game, CCP would have every legal right to restrict speech within it however they want in the interest of an enjoyable experience for their customers (the first amendment only applies to the federal government).
Personally, I would love to see CCP handing out automatic 30 day chat bans (prevents use of eve voice and chatting in any chat box, be it local, corp or private convo) for any hateful use of "******," "***got" or similar. Account banning for second offence. If you want to call someone "Caldari Pig-dog" or "Minmatar scum," that's fine. But hateful and violent speech from the out-of-game world is just pure asshattery and shouldn't be tolerated.
I am well aware of the cosmopolitan nature of eve and its players. I am also aware of other countries' hate speech laws (in general, not country by country). I also agree with you that this behavior should not be tolerated. However, I think the community of players should be the ones deal with it, and that the way to do so should be in game violence and ostracizing of players whose behavior you find to be objectionable. You will never convince me that freedom of speech is wrong or that thought crime as a concept is OK. Real world politics aside, I don't want to play a game where I have to be worried about the secret thought police monitoring chat logs. Also, PvP is so much more satisfying when it's against an opponent you know and hate. So, CCP please don't ban the racists. Let us hunt them instead! |

Not that it matters where you come from, your religion, matttress gymnastic orientation or your physical or mental ability. If they're using any of those things against you, then you MAY be being too open and honest at the start.
On the internet, it's good being honest, there's a very high level of anonymity about it. However - some people (lousy biggoted people) will use it against you, simply because they don't like you for whatever reason. Maybe you're better at Eve Online than they are. Or simply they don't like your spelling grammer or speach ability.
There's one thing I learnt playing online group games and that's to have a thick skin and the block command at the ready. Life is too short for hatred, there's the block command and a Kill On Sight list at your fingertips, waste no time on haters.
Sadly unlike employement law in most countries we can't prosecute and jail characters in Eve without very substantial proof - I wonder if any character has been banned and for how long for racial abuse/death threats typed in channel.

I have heard several stories of players being targetted by abusive/racist individuals. Upon petition the offender has usually been banned for several days upon review of the chat logs. On the other hand people are allowed their opinions. Just block/smack/pod those you find being idiots and get on with serious internet spaceships business.  |
