I just want to check I've got this right.

PLEX is basically legal ISK buying via the in game trade system?

I'm just wondering since Buying ISK with real money is a banning offense yet CCP have a legal way for people to do exactly what they ban others for. I just cant understand the reasoning behind CCP putting this in game. In all MMO's I've played I've always been against in game money trading for real money and all those games have had rules against it.

Just seems like a really strange move for a games developer to make.

CCP offer 60 Day timecards which people can buy for 22/35$ and they can sell these to other players for ISK or convert them to PLEX'es which they can then sell on the market.

Buying ISK from sites where people farm ISK from the game to sell is illegal, however.

they don't creat isk from this as it is from player to player so soneone has to have created the isk to buy the plex.

RMT is a reality and it will happen even when you try your best to prevent it. With PLEXs CCP gets the real moneyz and the isk only changes hands. Nothing is injected into the game. Since having huge piles isk, the biggest ship and the best gear with no real experience and friends just makes you a big payday for others, it isn't such a big deal.

PLEX/GTCs = Profit for CCP.

ISK Buying = No Profit for CCP.

Thats how it works, in a nutshell.

GTCs are just a way of paying for other peoples gametime - but for the trouble you get some in-game currency.

It is generally unheard of - yes, but in a way its like a microtransaction, since CCP profit from GTCs - whereas they wouldn't profit from ISK Sellers.

I've never bought Plex, and I could never stand using real money in other mmo's. I also could never stand item malls. In CCP's case tho, I dont mind it. Its fairly benign, as people use it to pay for thier EVE subscription, or they turn them into isk.
If someone with money wants to get isk thatway thru a legal channel, thats cool, because it makes people have to farm missions less which MANY of us find so boring we want to quit lol. Also the less worried we are about losing/replacing ships, I believe the more often people will be willing to engage in some pvp.

There are a couple of ideas that you need to understand for this to make sence.

First, where there is demand, there will be supply. No matter how hard CCP works to prevent RMT some people will still engage in it.

Next, is to understand why RMT is a bad thing. It is not much of a problem for someone to spend money to get ISK. ISK alone will not upset the balance of the game. The problem with RMT is those who sell the ISK. They have a tendency to disrupt the game. Per CCP's explinations, a large part of the account theft that they need to deal with is in connection to RMT. The many of the worst exploiters are invloved in RMT. RMT sellers drive the macro arms race. Basicly RMT sellers will do anything to make ISK as they can turn it into cash. Even if they do not engage in these EULA violating activities, the impact that they have one the in-game economy is unbalanced, as they are driven by out-of-game compensation.

Finally look at the effects of PLEX trading. You cannot make a living by hording PLEX's. They have no value outside of the game. While there are still players who will violate the EULA to attempt to achieve their in-game goals, the drive to do so is not as strong, as being caught will destroy all chance at achieving those goals, which is not the case with RMT.

With PLEX trading, there is not the artificial inflation of in-game production, as those who are generating the ISK will stop once they have enough PLEX tokens to pay for however many accounts they want and meet their in-game goals: ie once the fun runs out. RMT sellers are not going to stop because they have made to much money and want to do something else.

Ultimately PLEX trading is a means for those who enjoy earning ISK for the fun of it, to trade the option to do so for free with those who want instant ISK, without creating an incentive to take ISK production to an extreme.

This satisifies the demand created by those who want instant gratification and are therefore willing to pay for ISK, without the negitive effects that come from those who attempt to generate ISK for there own out-of-game profit.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

So basically it is RMT but the money goes into CCP's pocket so most people dont seem to have a problem with it. Fair enough. It still seems like a strange road to go down for CCP but I guess its thier game.

Once again thanks for the replies and hopefully I'll meet some of you in game at some point. Very Happy

It gives them more control of the situation that they otherwise wouldn't have.

Offering a legit way to buy isk removes a significant demand from isk sellers (most prefer the legit & no hassle method). It forces the price of "illegal" isk down lowering profit margins.

Easy to make analogies with the war on drugs and before/after prohibition of alcohol.

They're not making any additional money from selling ISK. When you buy isk, you're just paying for the persons account who made that ISK.

It's not cash in CCP's pocket, it's just a mechanism to have someone else pay your subscription.

thing is, whatever you buy with ISK (that you get by selling GTCs) can still be blown to smithereens, so most players don't mind.

Some of the most hilarious threads in the history of the forum have been started by or about players who thought they could $$$ their way to success in EvE.
