I have a question about the below method of mining.

This method is the most practical and efficient. It involves the unloading of your cargohold
into a jettisoned cargo container floating in space within 1,500m of your ship. A cargo
container, also known as a “can”, has 27,500m3 of space, which is much more than any
mining ship you will ever find.

The process is easy. Right-click anything in your cargo and jettison in. A container will
appear nearby. Select it in your overview, and keep it open. Then, as your cargohold fills
up, transfer the ore to the container. When the can is full, head back to the station, switch
to a hauler, haul the can back to the station, rinse and repeat.

**Taken from the complete miners guide sticky**

What exactly is a hauler?

An Industrial ship, like an Iteron, or a Bestower.

With good skills, and an good Modules, my Iteron V hauls 29,061 m3, and it's possible to get them to haul more.

Do i need something special to haul the can? A tractor beam for example

No, you approach to within 2,500 m of the can, open it, and drag the contents from the Can to your Cargo hold.

Keep in mind, ANYONE can do this, so look around the Forums for threads on "Can Stealing" and "Can Flipping".

hauler is an industrial or transport ship. each race has its own version's. caldari is badger or badger mark 2 for example

Are there ways to secure the can against pirates?
What about the tractor beam question? How does one "Haul" the can?
Edit: I think i understand, essentially I use a quick mining ship and drop the ore into the can, then come back with a ship with a huge cargo hold. Correct?

No, you cannot secure a Jettison can. It's just that, stuff you've Jettisoned.

As for a tractor beam, they are useful. You target your Can or Wreck, athe Tractor beam will drag the can to your ship. If your mining, it's usually easier to set a Bookmark at the cans position, and warp the Hauler directly to it.

Can people highjack your can even in high security areas? 0.7-1.0?

Correct, you don't haul the can as such, rather the contents of the can. The can itself will poof into a cloud of smoke when it's empty. Open cargo hold on your ship, open the can, drag from the can to your cargo hold.

Tractor beams are useful ways of getting faraway cans closer to you so you can empty them. Tractor beam on an industrial ship will reach to 20km and pull that can to you quicker than flying that distance manuall - but as said, most people will bookmark the can location and warp directly to that.

Also, been mentioned already but worth restating - anyone can open your jet can - so look for threads about "can flipping". Whilst you can deploy "Giant Secure Cans" in some solar systems (those with a 0.7 or below security rating if I recall correct), these will need the Anchoring skill (under the Corp Management tab in your skills chart) and they only carry 3900m3 of space - nothing like as much as a regular (if unsecure) "jetcan".

Couple changes since the guide was created:

You can now access jet cans from 2,500m away.

Jetcans disappear after a period of time (an hour?), even if they are in use. So replace them every so often if you're mining in one spot for an extended period.

Renaming the can seems to extend the self destruct time, to upto 2 hours

Don't jetcan. Use GSC's and anchor them.

Can't be anchored in 1.0-0.8 so only 0.7 and lower.

GSC's are pointless once you are past cruiser mining.

See, IMO its the opposite - if someone canflips your frigate/cruiser mining op, lol.

Though I tried the whole string of GSC, realised mining isn't for me at that point. It takes something with the reward level of an AFK activity, and makes you work for it. Bleh.

GSC's work just fine for cruiser miners.

But once you are in a retriever they fill up too fast to be worth the expense and effort of anchoring them and of moving from can to can to can.

Mining barges and exhumers do better jetcanning with appropriate precautions against hostiles.

One method I used while mining in a Cruiser, was to fill my turret slots with Miner II's, and one high slot for a Tractor Beam.
When my cargohold was full, make a jetcan, and tractor that around behind me like a car and trailer until it was full.

When it got full I'd then bookmark it and warp to station to get my Iteron, and make 2-3 trips to unload the can.
On my Iteron I'd have a Tractor Beam as well...because you rarely seem to warp to within grabbing range of your can.

As soon as you drop out of warp, align to station while locking and tractoring the can to you...once it's empty or your hold is full, hit dock and you pretty much insta-warp to station.

Yes, pretty much, even if you do lose the odd can, you're still going to come out way ahead of someone that doesn't lose anything but is handicapped by the restrictions on GSCs.

Alternatively you can metagame and have an alt character sitting next to your mining vessel in a hauler scooping the ore from the jet can or GSC directly into the cargo hold of the hauler. This in effect limits the time the ore is in a stealable state.

It does require you to meta game though...

GSC works fine, but they do require management as you move in between cans.
Get a Hauler with a 10MN AB to haul the ore out of the cans once you're done.
Once you get a Hulk, just use Cargo Expanders and Rigs and mine into your cargohold.

Hm I did not know this.

* I didnt know you could fit so much into Indy V. Sounds like mining can get profitable for me if I train industrial V

iteron best ship in hauling - if you have time to load use giant secure containers - they adding extra bonus to space.
I have riged ocator - with containers i picking up 45k m3 in iteron i counted gonna be more.
But beware - riged and fitted with cargo expanders ships becaming easy to take down -- they slow and fragile.

Or, dump directly into your alts orca... Of course you'd make more money if both you and your alt flew a cargo rigged hulk.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is if someone does take ur can they will appear red. WHATEVER U DO DO NOT ATTACK THEM, or they will have kill rights to kill u.
