I'm 10 days away from from finishing mining barge V and I was wondering if I should bother getting a covetor to help raise the money that I need to purchase a hulk. I have a retriever at the moment and I mine ice to make ISK.

I think I found the problem why you don't already have enough isk to buy a Hulk in the first place. Mining ice, especially in a Retriever, is probably one of the worst ways to make isk in the entire game.

Covetor to Hulk is a couple of dozen hours of training.

You should already have the ISK you need from all the mining you did in the retriever! Though harvesting ice probably is only just ahead of station spinning in terms of ISK/hr income.

If you don't have the money already, go ahead and buy the covetor. Once you have enough money, get one of your T2 manufacturing friends to upgrade it to a Hulk.

You might as well snag that Covetor then 'cause you're in it for the long haul. Sad

The good news is you can get a Mackinaw cheaper than you can get a Hulk. The bad news is you'll still be mining ice for ISK with it.

At least the Mack would be making about double the income of the ret from that ice, due to the bonuses :)

i'm mining ice since I usually do work or watch TV while mining. The long cycle time lets me set and forget

Used to do that, then I realized that wasn't really playing EvE and decided to get a Pilgrim. Razz
If you want pure raw AFKness (why play EVE then if you ask me), get a Hulk rather than a Mack.
Not as effiecient, but more cargo space.

I purchased my first Covetor while training for a Hulk. Then, when I had the skillz, I built my first Hulk which needed said Covetor in the building process!

You bought a Covetor for 24 hours?

That's more or less the time difference from Covetor to Hulk.

If you don't have the money for a Skiff/Mack/Hulk by the time you train to them, you did it wrong. Especially as you can have a Retriever maybe 40 days before a Hulk.

hmm,

you could probibly make more isk grinding valdspar in a covetor , im driving a hulk and making about 12 million a hour just off of common roids.... just a thoughtCool

Nope. I bought and used a Covetor for a WHOLE weekend until a corp mate had the Hulk BPC ready for me!

Well, this was waaaaaay back when NPC's sold shuttles and Tritanium struggled to get over 2.00 ISK per unit. And, since I wasn't using any haulers back then, mining in a Retriever (although as quaint as it seems) was not the ISK producer you may be thinking of. Plus, me and ISK never seem to keep each other company for very long. Especially with all that Spiced Wine on the market :P

I should point out that it won't go to waste. You can save the Covetor for more risky operations than your hulk. Even though I can fly a hulk - if I'm wh operating I use a Covetor. Insured Covetors are much easier to replace for the inevitable losses from risky operations. Sure hulks mine more but they cost MUCH more to replace. Until you've got the survival tactics down it's better to have Covetors around while you learn the lessons.

Definitely get the covetor, it's really not that much more expensive.

It has a decent-sized drone bay and you can handle 0.5 systems with 3 tier 1 drones.

Not that ive bothered to mine in a while, but i actually like the cov better than the hulk. It allows me to mine in dangerous areas without such a huge risk. If i get ganked, its not a huge deal...

Agree with using a covetor instead of a hulk in risky areas.

Costs 1/5 as much, mines only about 15% less.

MUCH less nervous strain, especially if your goal is relaxation & semi-AFK play.

Get involved with the Covetor, it's a good boat, slightly bigger tank, cargo hold, drone bay etc. than retriever - and that 3rd Strip miner will pay for itself pretty quickly. If you're an ice specialist, maybe look at the Mackinaw on the longer term as it has some pretty good cycle bonuses.

Oh yeah, totally. Covetors are great to keep around as loaners, they're potentially useful as insurable bait, and if you're not wealthy they're good to keep around at remote mining spots that you wouldn't necessarily be interested in traveling to in your Hulk (30 jumps away, lowsec travel involved, whatever). Back in my mining days I kept one Hulk at my home base and a couple of Covetors at other locations I occasionally mined.

By virtue of being cheap they've managed to avoid complete obsolescence.

It'll take you two hours getting back the ISK on the Covvy once you're in the Hulk.
