Does anyone miss the old scan system? Because I kinda hate the new one. In the old system (pre-Apocrytha) even though I agree it wasn't newb friendly and took forever to use, it felt like a real reward when you get in a plex and get an outragous amount of ISK in loot and salvage, because it was the sort of thing I could spend a whole afternoon on and not get bored.

I know CCP has recently been doing a lot of updates that are friendly to new users who just joined, but am I the only one who misses the way it used to be?

I miss it a bit. At least it rewarded you for investing into skills and implants. New one doesnt...

I like the new system. Tried the old system a few times and it was a drag worse than ice mining. The new one actually yields results in a timely fashion without boring you to death, waiting for timers to tick down. I'm willing to accept the pay off of higher competition for that. Makes it more exciting to secure a good find before other can do.

No I don't miss it at all, it was drawn out, tedious and boring.

It used to take me anything up to an entire afternoon just to scan and complete a single site, now I can do three or four in the same amount of time. So in fact the rewards are, um, more rewarding?

I miss the old directional scanner with the little system mapon it. That change was a real step backwards.

I liked the old one more, less input gave me the feeling of being some kind of space renegade kicking back at the helm of his ship - half asleep, scanning aimlessly... until a hit was found.

The new one, although functional - kinda just makes the whole thing more direct, and explorers are no longer really rewarded for hours of fruitless scanning, now you just throw the probes out - shuffle them a bit and bam, theres your hit.

I remember scanning a site for an hour and a half on the old system. Knowing the site was there - but just couldn't pin it. I was so close to giving up when I finally nailed the site.

A small bit of combat later and I emerged from the site 700 Million ISK richer. This was slap bang in the middle of empire too, so I really felt my endless toil was rewarded.

Maybe we're just old school. But I did prefer the feeling of floating aimlessly, forever scanning until that juicy hit would finally start you into action.

Yes, because now it is even more tedious and I don't like easy games, instant rewards and dumbing EVE down.

If you want to make it harder go with a smaller group or by all means solo, then you'll have plenty to worry about other than it being easy to find stuff.

I fly solo or in small groups but it doesn't matter because we speak about scanning, not shooting things up.
Sad thing is that now scanning is only formality and "exploration" became another "shooting things up" activity.

The feel of the old system was better. More randomness and planning to deal with. The interface and the time it takes to scan is much better with the new system though, those old scan times were just terrible.

Keep the new system and don't change anything for wormholes, but for profession sites bring back some more of the randomness and maybe the old gimmick where two probes can't be within range of each other. Something to make it a little more interesting.

As a long time user of the old system, I really do not understand why some people want it back. The new system is like 100x better -.-. You just don't know how to use it.

How can you not know how to use it? You can master it in less than an hour.

Because now all the downtime warriors are hunting out any plexes worth anything more than a sneez at before anyone else gets a chance.

I hate the idea of probes being so critical to doing anything. To me it makes no logical sense.

So watching a timer is now hard?

The only challenge with the old scanning system was if you would find site before you would get so bored you would stop.

And randomness isnt good.

While it was not good, neither is it good when both back-door and popular systems have sod-all exploration wise short of wormholes. In the last 4 days i've probes about 100 systems, around 30 of them are unique, i probed each one at the same time each day (roughly). So many wormholes. about 15 "Frigate hull and lower" complex's (Some including the bugged ones). Less combined Radar, Ladar, Magneto and Gravi sites than you could count on both hands, and the majority were Gravi.

All these results were gathered in 0.6 systems down to 0.4, and a handful of 0.3 systems. All of the "Frigate and lower" hulls were in 0.5 space. I at least expected cruiser and lower hulls from 0.5 tbfh.

Their spawn place is still random though. With old crappy sucky terrible scanning system i have done also 30 systems (15 unique), with as only result 1 gravi site.

Okay, just because I was a bit rushed on making this thread in the morning, I'll basically explain why I liked it more.

#1. You actually got combat sites. Now all you get are wormholes for Unknowns.

#2. You got a decent reward for your time. I haven't gotten decent plex loot (value > 10mil) since the Apocrytha, but gotten 10x as many plexes.

#3. You didn't have to micromanage constantly. I read quite a few books while plexing, now I can't even go to the bathroom before my scan is done.

#4. It just doesn't feel worth the time invested in it. Hell, I make more ISK camping 1/10 on-map plexes than on scanning 3/10s out.

I prefered the old one. It didnt make my computer cry like a schoolgirl. And it was so much easier to probe out ships.

This has nothing to do with old system vs. new...this is just the introduction of wormholes.

Wait a minute, you want it to be harder and timeconsuming and have less of a random element? That just sound like a lot of work. I'm here to play a game, I prefer more rolls of the dice myself. I'm more of a hunter than a farmer type person I guess.

I don't see what the big deal is about it being too easy if you're just going to farm the highly predictable results anyway...

The new system is fantastic. It takes the cool concepts of the old system and applies them in a way that's fun and works well instead of boring and horrible.

My main complaint now is that I've already seen so many of the sites, especially in w-space. It might be nice if there were more options available. Oh, and the three probe hit bug inexplicably still being in the game after this long.

And as for no combat sites, I've seen quite a few of them all over the place, but I think especially in Amarr and Minmatar space.

I'm sorry, you don't like it as much, though!

This is the most poignant criticism in my opinion. Downtime shouldn't be bloody Christmas morning for the few lucky enough to take advantage of that timing day in day out. Things need to be much more random and distributed throughout the day. It wouldn't be that hard to change and it would be much more fair to all.

Basically this. I would like the new system a lot more if I actually got some decent stuff when I'm on.

It does, a lot. The difference now is you don't have to have near-perfect scanning skills, rigs, Sisters Launcher, etc just to get your scan time low enough that you stand a chance of finding something before dying of boredom. With basic skills, it might take you 10 minutes to pinpoint a site - with Perfect skills, it might only be 3. When you have to probe out 20 sites, I'd say it was worth it...

Old exploration scanning system was basically a huge, stupid timesink. It took no real skill - just skillpoints, ISK and absolutely nothing better to do with your time than watch a number count down. Thrilling, really... Neutral

You guys who liked the old system are suffering from some thing called 'cognitive dissonance'. It was so bad that you didn't have sufficient justification to your own psyche that you were spending time on it, therefore you convinced yourself, sub-consciously, that it was actually really fun.

Hence the responses like 'since the new scanning came in I haven't been able to be NOT-PLAYING EVE (reading/whatever) nearly as much! The horror!'
