lets assume the following:
a = b
Now, we do stuff
a^2 = ab :multiply by a
a^2 - b^2 = ab - b^2 :subtract b squared
(a - b)(a + b) = b(a - b) :factor them
a + b = b :divide by (a-b)
b + b = b :because a=b
2b = b :combine like terms
2 = 1 :see?

Wrong ! If a=b then a-b = 0. You can't divide stuff by 0.

b + b = b :because a=b
2b = b :combine like terms
2 = 1 :see?

You can, you just can't define it with traditional mathematics, because if you have a = b/c, and c=0 then you also have to conclude that a(c) = b, a(0) = b, thus a could be any real number, and is hence just considered undefined. Also, b would equal 0 even if you defined b beforehand, which is why you cannot divide zero by zero, as it's still undefined.

There are mathematics that divide by zero, however, and also use imaginary numbers to calculate information (electrical engineering I think is one of the big fields that use imaginary).

Wtf? You still cant divide by zero on the z plane either.

Sure, one way of complex integration is searching for and integrating around singulairities, but imaginary number are there so you can root negative numbers (oversimplified, yes), not so that you can divide by zero.

Otoh, there truly are some very abstract algebraic form where zero is not a non-divider, but that requires about 6 years of uni math to even begin to understand.

You're talking gobblede****. If a is treated as a function of c and b is nonzero, then we have an asymptote at c=0. If b is zero, then a is 0 everywhere except c = 0 where a is undefined.

As for the OP's example, it's just saying 1*0 = 2*0, therefore 1 = 2 which is obviously fallacious.

I suck at math but even I know that turns out to be 0 = 0 which is true! Very Happy

Try this: (note, sqr()=square root)

i=i //i is sqr(-1) as we all knowCool
sqr(-1)=sqr(-1) //using definition from above
sqr(1/-1)=sqr(-1/1) //rewrite -1 as a fraction
sqr(1)/sqr(-1)=sqr(-1)/sqr(1) //as we know, sqr(x/y)=sqr(x)/sqr(y)
i=1 //cross multiply. x/y=a/b then x*b=y*a
1=-1 //square both sides
2=0 //adds 1 to both sides
1=0 //divide by 2
2=1 //add 1

Ah the fun of multivalued functions. When taking square roots, you have to consider both the positive and negative values.
