We hate the Local...
It totaly screws up the whole idea of hiding, ambushing, pirating etc... and it just simply do not fit into this game (dirty universe, not good for kids).

The idea camed like 5 minutes ago, I am quickly writing it down here so I wont forget :D

SO... we remove the local and give the players two types of anchorable probes: 1 - once anchored sits indefinately but is visible and destroyable. The second is cloacked and timed (runs only for like 10 minutes). The first is cheap, the second expensive.
Add a skill "Observer probes" would give you the ability to control 1-5 probes.

They would work like that - u launch and anchor it and in the scanning menu there is a new tab [observing] where the probes are relaying info on what objects they have in their vincinity.

So an observer probe sitting at the gate would see if there is any traffic going on (and telling a nearby pirate gang if to warp in and egnage). Probes would tell what ships, standing or even pilot info (based on the ships id - which could be falsificated using a different skill or module).

If you ask me i dont know why this system is not ingame since its launch hehe.

Suggestions welcome.

that's...actually a pretty decent idea. My faith in F&I has gone from about a 2 to a 2.5

no, its a shocking idea.

do you know why small scale PvP happens?

because people know other people are in the system. without consistent local, noone would know anyone was there. throwing out probes over hte whole system every time you enter a system wouldnt work, because you dont know who is in a station.

- you fly into a system and see some pplz... and u still have to find them (they usually quickly hide before you find them).
- if an option would be to have an observer probe 2 systems away... i actually believe that would provoke more small scale pvp.
- that system would promote those that are clever. Imo survival just because u have the local open is dishonourable.
- more small gangs would be able to roam due to them not being visible as being small. You see two ships on the gate, you attack with your fleet of 6, suddenly 10 of enemies warp in. Pure fun :)
- if u think there are lots of enemies u always can scan them down.

if you really need the local - at least put there only those ppls that are warping (their wapr signature is visible by ships sensors). One would still get a chance to run.

Directional scan.

Or you could just drop combat probe, set to 64 AU, and count the hits.

I like ideas which replace local with real intel mechanics. Alot.

However, I think they aren't possible to implement. Players have a status quo with current local, that they'll want very badly to be kept. It's not that I don't like the idea, but I think it's going to cause a lot of arguments due to it proposing to radically change a very powerful and used current game mechanic.

I would point out that wormholes have no local, and PvP seems to happen just fine in them. It's an over-used intel tool, and actually confers just as much safety as it does opportunity for PvP. It enables the classic buildup of forces without any effort: they have two carriers and battleships - we bring more carriers - they see local rise and a scout investigates - they bring more ships - and so on. Eventually someone's brave or stupid enough to actually engage.

There's little in the way of surprise factor in current gang PvP and often it just degenerates into a laggy blob fight as both sides mass to try and outnumber the opponents. It's classic herd psychology. Lag & desyncs aren't going anywhere so I think I'd rather have a greater reliance on intel and the opportunity for surprise than a continued reliance on local as an early warning tool. It is a balancing act however.

I think I prefer Ruze's idea so far Twisted Evil. That said, the whole area needs a continuum of approaches around local, cloaking, intel gathering - it needs a comprehensive look to allow for a wide variety of tactical opportunities.

Get rid of local entirely for example without any other changes and cloaks become really important. It's no coincidence that some roaming gangs in wormholes are employing cov ops, force recons & stealth bombers.

i do not like this; eve is a mmorpg and not seeing whos in the same system makes it even more eve offline. In w-space i find it good to not have a local chat, but then again im only roaming w-space every now and then, and is supposed to be a strange and far far away environment for exploration.

Although I can imagine what the reaction will be: What about solo-players?
They'll either take alts or simply stay away from dangerous systems, because they can't give up a (high) slot without losing all efficiency.

I don't think either result is desireable.
