Okay, so I've been doing a lot of solo high-sec exploration (and dabbling in class 1 wormholes) and am thinking about trying to move out to low-sec with the intent of hunting down solely radar and mag sites (i tried one unknown complex in low-sec once and it killed my Cyclone dead).

Now, in high-sec, the radar and mag sites are a total cakewalk, you could complete most of them in a Velator. I'm wondering how much of a ramp up in difficulty the low-sec sites are. Leaving aside for a moment the issue of avoiding ebil player pirates, can these sites be soloed in a tech 1 cruiser by a low SP player? I'm thinking either a vexor or a rupture.

What sort of tank would i need?

Lowsec combat sites vary quite a bit in difficulty; before going in, find out what you're up against and consider bringing friends.

Radar and mag sites are basically profession sites for explorers...they're an income source for people without a lot of SP in combat or mining, and who aren't doing booster production.

As such, they're quite easy. Yes, a t1 cruiser could do them pretty easily as long as you have a decent fit.

In lowsec and highsec yes. In 0.0... not so much. I ran across one that had me fighting six Angel Cherubim at once, plus support.

So? It's a BS. It should be pretty easy to dodge with an AF/Cruiser

while you take out the assorted cruiser and frigs (if they spawn). But yeah, AF can do them.

You usually have to take out the guards before you can hack the can, and I've had problems breaking some low sec npc tanks in an assault frigate (ishkur). Granted I only had drone interfacing 4 but the OP probably has that or less.

A Vexor with T2 drones didn't have similar problems in low sec magnetometric/radar in my experience, but it did have them with some low sec unknowns.

Radars in low-sec are fun, especially when you know that at any time you can get ganked by one or more other players.

Finding the right tactic to evade them is the key. Twisted Evil

I do them periodically when there are no human targets in my home system. Most of the sites have cruisers and below in low sec though I have seen the occasional BS spawn. A well tanked BC should dispatch the rats quickly enough. The biggest issue is hacking/analyzing/salvaging the cans tends to result in respawns, so your combat and profession ship need to be the same thing. I have found the myrmidon and dominix ideal for this as they have plenty of spare midslots for code breakers/analyzers. The highs on drone boats can also be used for tractors and salvagers instead of guns, so overall they are the best ships for the task.

Dodging pirates is easy enough once you make the high/low sec border crossing, 90% of low sec is devoid of players. It's only the border and a few choke points that are risky.

The Ishtar, or other HAC's are the perfect ship for this role.

I typically use a BC for all low sec explore sites, except for some of the larger plexes (usually expedition sites). Sure, it's overkill on the Radar and Mag sites, but I get a bit more carghold space, and I don't mind giving up a mid slot for the required mod.

Some Losec sites are easier than others. Radars vary from some BC and smaller spawns, to multiple BS spawns + support that need to be dealt with before accessing the can.

If you don't kill them you get a message along the lines of "You can't access this while it's being guarded" or something to that effect.

I've had up to 3 BS's plus a handful of smaller ships spawn right on top of me that pound my shield tanked Drake pretty hard at range.
