I don't see anything in the info about science skills, the ones you need to work with research agaents, that tells me what the advantage is to train them beyond level 1. Is there any use in training them higher?

Yep the higher the science skill your research agent is researching in the more RPs you get daily.

Yeah RP generation is calculated by (your skill level + agent level) x quality level effects.

Several of them are also required for the manufacture of T2 ship construction components.

Actually there are 3 skills that determine how many RP you get daily.

First and most important is the science skill that you are researching.

The other two are social skills, Connections and Negotiations.

A level 4 agent of let's say nanite engineering with a Quality of 0 with nanite engineering at level 1 you get you 25 RPp/d

The same agent with nanite engineering at level 4 would get you 64 RPp/d

Add Connections and Negotiations into the mix at level 4 each respectively will net you 77.44RPp/d

of course you could take the science skill to level 5 as well as the two social skills in which case you would get 102.87 RPp/d

As you can see there is a definate advatnage to training your skills up higher than the minimum required.

And as an aside the skill level also factors in for invention success chance.

Ummm

Effective Quality 0, taking your Connections, Criminal Connections, Diplomacy, Negotiation and standings into account in addition to the agent's quality.

Directly from the show info on a research agent whos base quality is -20 (Social 4, Negotiation 4, and connections 3). Although the formula for Agent quality does not show Connections being used in the calculations.

Something somewhere is wrong then.

Yes it does.
Connections 3 and 4 raise EQ by 1 point, connections 5 raise EQ by 2 points for R&D agents (they always have 0 base standings).
Or, well, it DID have an effect on RPs. Not sure if the latest patch hasn't "fixed" it with their changes on the way the skills work.
