EVE-Files has now since just under a month ran some downloads via torrents and webpeers. What's your experience and thoughts, does it work properly? Do you get ok speeds? Better stability and less hassle with stalled downloads? And so on.

Feel free to give me some feedback good and bad, ideas and suggestions. Keep or trash.

The experience from the server side is less resource usage, better speeds and less annoyance with stalled and closed connections. And the amount of people assisting in seeding the torrents improves the performance and usage on my mirrors, so it's been positive from the distributor side at least.

---
Currently EVE-Files only makes torrents of files larger than 75MB, is that size good, too big or too small. Would you rather see the limit be lower or maybe even higher?

I have been thinking of lowering the limit to around 50MB but I am unsure what others feel about using torrents for small files, as there is a bit of hassle setting up a client and so on (ofc the direct http link will always be available either way).

Thoughts on filesizes?

I'm very positive it's a real improvement I had alot of downloads going < 50kb/s before. I have a 30 mbit line :/ I'm really impressed well done, of course I'll help seed everytime I download. Torrents rule!!

Great speeds and none of the connections issues i usually have with e-f.

And seeding something that wont land me in court is always nice.

Awesome for me download most vids over 1mb/s now. Was fast for me before also but I never get DCs and stuff anymore now or connection problems to the site.

Very nice work man!

I love it, it's very fast and it's very stable. Very well done, Chribba :)

On filesizes, 50 is ok by me. Nothing smaller IMO.

Only newer files get torrentized atm (apart from a few older manually fixed due to popular demand).

But, since the torrent feature uses "webpeers" there will always be at least one full seeder no matter what (as long as the file isn't removed ofc). You may have noticed them sometimes in the peer list, running odd clients (OMG Labs-W3D/*), they are the normal mirror-webservers assisting in the seeding of the file (hence why there will always be at least one seeder).

Thumbs up. Definitely a good usage of resources, I may just start seeding some stuff from my own server just to make it a little nicer.

I've had good experiences with eve-files since the recent updates. That being said though; I very frequently use torrents so my network config is all set up to work properly, I can imagine some people having issues with this.

As for the filesize threshold, 75MB seems like a fair first choice, however if in the future torrents get more active and you get a better general trend of people seeding them, maybe upping that threshold to 150 might be a good step with all the additional bandwidth available.

While for me personally it doesn't really matter that much as I'm fine either way; I can imagine the lesser experienced (with torrents / network config) or people stuck behind proxy's/firewalls would appreciate a larger collection of http downloads.

A second option might be to provide a http download based on torrent swarm status/activity; I'm not sure how in the end this would work out but if you would provide a http download for a file that has say, 100+ 100% completed torrents you would provide the http download, you'd be sure that everyone has the ability to access 'popular' files. (this is of course a completely arbitrary number, I have no idea what the average download stats are).

edit: obviously, muchos gracias for the great service :)

So far I've only downloaded from eve-files via torrents about twice, that was because the direct download seemed to be experiencing difficulties. I generally use direct download because of the faster speeds (I'm currently downloading 2 files now at a combined speed of 1380kB/sec) whereas using torrents I was generally getting less than 200kB/s.

Maybe it was because the file was new, maybe there weren't many seeding. I dunno but direct downloads tend to be faster for me (sorry for raping your bandwidth... [am I? I have no idea] ). Needless to say, any files I do torrent I will seed for the forseeable future.

Chribba, would you prefer people to use torrents?

Edit: Downloading WILDFIRE...avi at over 1MB/s using torrents so maybe my previous comments were wrong.

The ISP I'm on has traffic shaping measures during the daytime which seem to restrict Torrenting specifically so I can't ever get above 10kb/sec from it and have to download directly... Sad

At night when that's not in effect however it goes at full speed, no probs at all. Very Happy

Torrent is a godsend. No more time-outs and having to start from scratch.

Also I get much faster DL speeds this way.

I don't know what it would do to your server load etc. But I think 50mb is to low, 100mb seems better for me personally.

But if you can limit server load a lot by using torrents at 50mb then I think you should go ahead.

Maybe add feature to both download directly and torrent for files 50-150mb in that case? So ppl that feel comfortable with torrents can torrent and ppl that have no clue can keep doing it the "normal" way.

That feature is already possible, instead of clicking the huge "download now" link, just under it you have the "normal web" link, ofc it's made a bit smaller to promote the torrent and my network Laughing

I had problems downloading files from EVE-Files before, would stall and never reach 10% of my max bandwidth (with Firefox). With torrent now it's stable and rather quick, got 1 mb/sec the other day.

Over all a much improoved, thx. On the filesize, I got no idea, 50 or 75 mb, both sound reasonable.

Adding Torrents are a great idea Chribba. 50MB is ok as a minimum file size. I wouldn't go any lower then that. Personally I would leave it at 75MB for now, unless you see some performance issues the way it is now?
