In my opinion the jump gates simply ruin the immersion of being in an endless space.
Don't get me wrong, i'm not talking about the gates themselves, but, what i mean is: when you jump through a gate, it's like you exit from a box and enter into another one.
It's like you actually 'enter' into the gate and go into another box.

Maybe a 'very short' 'animation' of you warping at an insane speed with all the space 'curving' around you could help.
Or.... anyone got an idea? :D

The same can be said about docking. Quite frankly, I dislike the warp-through-celestial-objects premise, but I suppose plotting courses around every such planet and moon would become tedious. The moral of the story, is that EVE is far from realistic. The sooner you come to terms with that, the less flamed you shall be.

I know what you're saying, but it's not something that can really be done for now. What's out in space between all the systems? Nothing... It'd be boring really. You're right about the box comparison, however that box is inifinite as it would take you FOREVER to "attempt" to reach another system by warp travel alone. (if you could manually warp that is)

We also need the session change as you cannot have the entire EVE cluster on one node.

There probably are ways arround that...but none that I can see in our future in EVE.

There's really no reason why instead of sending you to a black screen to load the station, they can't have an animation of your ship being towed inside the station. Basically an animated loading screen.

While on the docking subject, it would be fun to have some sort of visual cue to let you know when the 30 seconds is up and you can switch ships. I was thinking maybe an animation of your ship actually landing on a dock inside the station. When the ship is landed, the 30 seconds is up and you can switch. I'd settle for something as simple as a docking light. They have these for aircraft and ships. When the light turns on/off, you're docked.

EDIT: Typo

Maybe hurtling through Babylon 5 style hyperspace while the destination system is loading? Wormholes would be similar, but a different color.

Docking could show the stations tractor beams locking on to your ship and moving you into your hangar bay while the station is actually loading.

The whole jump process looks pretty much slapped together. First the current grid vanishes. A good 2 seconds later the new space background shows up, another half second later theres sometimes a short "loading..." window and then new stuff starts showing up on the grid. Not to mention the fact that the interface becomes unresponsive during this process.

Considering how often people have to jump they should really try to improve this.

I agree with you here. This is definitely something for CCP to consider. It would greatly increase the immersion of the game if we could get all these session changes to appear more seamless. The only problem is do we want CCP to work on this instead of other things that need to be done?

The problem with "session change" animations, is that they are OMG AWESOME the first 5 times, and after that, you just wish you could just disable the damn thing.

Not really. Sessions changes already take a lot of time. The bar that shows up during undocking is not a loading bar so the client could really just play some fancy animation instead.

Or in other words: The time taken to undock/jump shouldn't increase - just the way that process is conveyed to the user should.

Why? You're docking/undocking anyways. Would you rather stare at a black screen or an animation showing what you're doing? Sure after 5 times the animation is the same each time, but the black screen doesn't change either.

I think the point people are trying to make it that they rather see SOMETHING other than just a black screen.

Maybe have an option to disable session change animations for people with slower computers.

Freelancer did it well.
I still remember the first time I undocked from Manhattan.
And now I remember the Starflier. Good old Flea.

This plays hand in hand with my concept of mid warp battles in another thread. I would like to see the ability to intercept not just outrun other ships, so having a simple node that is used while the warping load is in progress would be nice. Granted it would require a node for each jumpbridge but it would def increase the realism and immersion.

And yes Freelancer FTW

Warping between the systems isn't so long - you have what - 20 to 40 AU's between close systems and maybe 200-300 AU between far systems. Ships can't jump that much in one warp, but that wouldn't take that long. Gate is just faster and from programming perspective better (scene loading, changing grid). And they then will need to make system background somehow to transit from one to other - that's painting a huge amount of space :)
Idea is good, but can't be made - too much manpower and issues.

Proof of it being a bad idea is who liked the animated map thing?

Frankly it looks cool, however it takes time to animate and it's hassle if you trying to do a quick check.

And I believe CCP finally got rid of it on the test server (unless it's a graphical bug) and i've never been happier with it :P.

However if anything maybe have the option to see all these cut-scene type effects so that everyone is happy and if it's not used then so be it.

We already have a subtle one - enable display of session timers in the ESC menu. It's useful all over the place ;)

1 lightyear = 63,000+ AU's
So I kinda doubt they would only be between 20-300 AU apart. Unless I'm mistunderstanding your statement.

Your interpretation of the idea might be too complicated. OP was talking about a short animation. This might be generic with no relation to source and target space. I think even fade in/fade out would qualify as animation, but that's probably not what the OP means.

Nope, different thing. Unless I misunderstand the OP he basically wants the progress bar (undocking)/client hanging for 5 seconds (jumping) replaced with an animation... Or apparently just the jump.

The map animation was much more complicated because it took your location into account (zooming out from your location to show the entire solar system or even the entire galaxy). It was also annoying because it bugged out more often than it worked and served no purpose other than wasting time.
A jump does take time. (So does undocking.) Covering this up with an animation would not increase the time it takes but merely make it less immersion breaking :)

I would actually be even satisfied with some concept art on the loading screen....Different themes for different factions, corps etc.

An animation would be nicer, but let me just remind you that in most non-safe regions, you want dock/undock to be as fast as possible.

I disagree. What we're really asking for is something like the warp animation (which easily could have been made a black screen with a "loading..." status bar) for the docking and stargate processes. In the case of warping, the game is pre-loading the destination grid from the server while giving the player some client-side eye candy. There's no reason jump from star to star can't be done with a 10-second star-trekky warp animation... it's going to take 10 seconds anyway, after all. Same goes for docking... it won't create lag because the animation is all client-side graphics, and presumably people could turn it off if they have insufficient graphics cards.

i've always felt limited in this game... its just the way it is... until we can warp in any direction without having to lock on to something it will continue to feel that way.

hmm....sounds like you've played Freelancer. everything said on this thread is exacally like that game. its just too bad CCP devs hadn't played that game before making EVE (then again...not sure which came first) then we would be able to acually PILOT our ships.
