I use the following format:

ABC-01D

Where
A is the first letter of the ship's race... (or corporation in case of ORE ships)
B is the first letter of the class of ship... (In case of collision, use acronyms)
C is the first letter of the type of ship... (In case of collision within same class and race, use first few letters).
01 is a fitting indicator used to track fittings...
D is a letter incrementing after each ship bought (if required, another letter is appended, representing a base 26 number for ships numbering above 26)...


So, for example, my second moa (Caldari Cruiser) using my fitting labeled 6 would be called
CCM-06B

My tenth gallente shuttle (Shuttle craft, shuttle class) would be called [here is a special case since no fitting is applicable, it is using label 00]
GSS-00J

My first amarr Abaddon (Battleship) using fitting 1 would be called
ABsAb-01A

Not a perfect naming scheme, but it does the job.

I normally give my industrial ships (think freightorz hulks and the lot) just some stupid random names... Hulk is named Om Nom Nom Nom for example and my obelisk is named Koelkast (fridge) and my industrial sized haulers are just Mover I, II etc..

as for my other ships they normally go after a faction from my story, the ORS. and mostly with mythology (flagship name is ORS Atlantis, another is Sparta etc.)

I name my ships after discworld characters. I have most of the main characters from Ankh-Morpork already, I might have to get new ships just to be able to use more names.

Rincewind is the name of my badger mk 2 that has warp core stabs to help it run away.

Sergeant Colon, is the dependable but slow, and long employed Raven.

There's more of course, the Drake was named after lord Vetinari, some don't really have a reason, but I like Carrot Ironfounderson for the Hulk and Corp. Littlebottom for the mackinaw.

I rarely have time to do nothing but think about names any more but when I did I took it seriously.

I usually name them according to the certain ship characteristics or sometimes other peoples oppinions. I don't care about being scanned down as I almost always fit a cloak.

Moa "Looks Like Crap"
Drake "FC's Hate Me"
Nighthawk "No Grid"
Scorp "Primary"
Kitsune "Toe Jam"
Raven "Cruise!ROFL!"
Hawk "lolWut??"

My names have "Rocket" in them, and a characteristic of the ship.

Providence = 0.001MN Rocket.
Abaddon = Laser Guided Rocket.
Typhoon = Rocket Trash Can.

Etcetera.

Usually, but not always.
Often in a Culture ship style, but sometimes functionally, or occasionally just strangely. All depends.

Mine are all called "chicken" then their use.

So my salvage ship is called "Chicken salvager"

And my viator is called "Chicken transport"

I dont know why.

All my ships saying something clever like "Crap I died it's my" so that it says "Crap I died it's my wreck" when I lose it, or I'll call it "I'M PETITIONING" or something. But when I'm in 0.0 I'm all about calling myself a "Sansha's Devil Wreck"

I usually name with something unrelated that tells me about the setup of that ship, for example, roaming HACs and Ceptors tend to be called something cell phone related (or mobile as we call it in the UK).

So I have a Cerberus called Vodafone and a Vaga called T-Mobile - gets some interesting comments in local :>

i name ships with what ever comes too mind then follow it up by naming all the hulls of the same type with numbers

Carrier of mine i name StarLance i am up too Starlance II atm.

where on my blockade runner i call Shadow Run ya i made it too Shadow Run VI so...
