I've been playing for a little while now as a miner but I want to do combat more as AFK mining get's a little boring at times. So I was trying to decide between Amaar and Minmatar. I like guns more than missles and I'm not exactly sure how good lasers are vs. the guns that Minmatar use. I think they both are shield tankers except that Amaar rely on it more since Minmatar use speed as well? So which is easier to learn and how do they both fare in PvE and PvP? and for whichever race what should I focus on when I'm playing them as far as tactics and skil go? Thanks

amarr are armor tankers. 100%. not a shield tanker in their whole lineup.

lasers are of limited usage in PvP with one extenuating change. lasers only deal EM and therm damage, arguably the easiest to tank, since amarr and gallente are armor tankers, and minni are mixed, meaning that 2.5 out of 4 races can tank em/therm easy.

but, lasers also dont need ammo replacement (except faction and t2). thats why the amarr dread is so valuable. it can fire and fire and keep firing till the cows come home. in the right circumstances, that advantage is simply devastating.

lasers are medium for damage and range.

minni guns are inferior to others in that they fire mainly in falloff, making it harder to hit, and they also do less DPS, although artys do a lot of volley damage.

both minni and amarr have weak ewar, amarr are probably more powerful post nerf with bonuses to anti-cap gear.

minni are fast and small, but less HP. amarr are slow and fat, but have thicker skin.

so, which one?

they both have a niche in PvP, which you chose depends on your playstyle. amarr are definitely better PvE, because they dont need to keep swapping ammo.

From a personal perspective, I love the amarr. Why? I can't really say. I just think the Harb and heretic are a lot of fun to fly. This applies to all factions. You start with a race and in most peoples' minds your first instinct is to train for that race. My char is gallente but I learned relatively early that I dislike gallente ships. So I started training Amarr instead. When you find something you like, start training for that. The skills you trained before will help to varying degrees regardless of which race you end up in.

It is worth pointing out that you can of course cross train other races ships. Personally I really like my minmatar ships (PvE & PvP) although I am cross training Gallente as well.

It mostly depends on what playstyle you're looking for. On average Minmatar caters more for solo combat where a lack of damage and tanking is made up for by tactics and fast footwork. Amarr ships tend to shine in groups, they have more range so they can sit back a bit which is good since most of the time they're not exactly agile and they're not at all versatile.

There's also a ship difference; Minnie has great frigates, cruiser and BC but lacks in the BS department. Amarr doesn't have a great frigate and it's cruisers are soso, but the BC's and BS are great.

lasers are medium for damage and range? O_o
more like lasers are the damage kings and their range isnt half bad either.

lasers work just fine in pvp btw... that crap about lasers EM/TH is bullcrap.
Hybrids are Kin/TH and used by 2 out of 4 races, vs amarrs 1 race useing Em/TH.
Id say the chances of people useing high kin/th (esp TH) is alot higher in pvp than insane EM resistances.

the good stuff to shoot at people = EM and Exposives, people rarely fit as high resistances to these as they do to the others.

TH is the most used source of damage, and probably the one most people go overboard protecting themselfs against.

Actually odds are people in PvP are omni-tanking their armour, which boosts the already high EM resists quite a bit.

indeed shadow, as some here have already pointed out, crosstraining is also a viable strategy. there is nothing stopping you from flying both.

im so epicly crosstrained that i can fly any t1 subcapital with appropriate fittings (i.e. not an armor tanked raven), and be passable, if not actually good, in any given scenario.

for a long time now, people have been saying "specialize, specialize!" to new players. but if you can get to the point where there is no non t2 item that you cant use, you are in a position to be useful to everyone.

I'm a Caldari pilot who jumped ship to Amarr. For good reason.

Back in the day when Amarr were the "broken/underpowered" ship lineup, I went ahead and skilled for them, for one simple reason:

laz0rs of d3ath + golden bling hulls = win to me

The changes later on to damage resistance mechanics and pulse lasers were just the cherry on top to me. Before, people would ask me to bring another ship. Now, anything BC+ in size is a good addition to any group.

As said before, dont focus on the sub-BC lineup (sans the T2 versions, the Amarr HAC's are very good) and instead focus on the larger shipping. Amarr's meant to be the big burly guy with the laser cannon on his shoulder who can take a hit and still fire back in the group.
