Hmm...well, my favorite bands are:
Sisters of Mercy Switchblade Symphony Siouxsie and the Banshees
And I also like:
Cruxshadows Fields of the Nephilim Bauhaus
In my mind those are some of the core goth bands and I rarely venture beyond them to anything else, but I'm finding some of the suggestions here pretty interesting. |

Edited by: Uuve Savisaalo on 17/10/2008 06:05:46goth is a little restrictive, but i'm going to give you a few specific suggestions on bands and particular albums. again, i'm not entirely certain as to what you're looking for but here's a shot in the dark 'nostalgia' by HTRK,dustdevils, earlier work by the swans, big black, birthday party, 'honeymoon in red' by lydia lunch, live skull, pain teens, crime & the city solution, r@peman, savage republic, circa 'trudge/ceremonial' or 'tragic figures' skullflower,
unwound, earlier einstürzende neubauten, early sonic youth, circa 'sonic death' & 'confusion is sex', etc.. distorted pony, 'i could live in hope' by low, codeine, 'spiderland' by slint.sunn o)))'s 'black one', pretty much anything off of 'rune grammofon' or 'miasma' labels, like svarte greiner's 'knive'.. dark ambient things from touch records ( philip jeck, jacob kirkegaard etc..) i don't know if i'd call any of it goth, but its some rather dark and out of the way sounds. check them out. maybe you'll like some of this. |

Can't offer anything "current", but here's some others...
This Mortal Coil Christian Death Cocteau Twins Clan of Xymox
Live365.com has a bunch of relatively recent material:
"In Dark Faith Eternal" is one 365 channel that plays a lot of mellowy goth songs, from small & unsigned bands.
"Dark Sparkle Radio" is another 365 channel that plays more of the classic bands, but you'll still find bands you've never heard of. (That channel might require a subscription, though. The other doesn't)
Maybe Otep is worth a listen to (especially "House of Secrets"), if you're looking for that heavier type. (Not to be confused with Opeth, mentioned earlier)
I saw The Cult mentioned before, as well. Some of the earlier incarnations (Southern Death Cult & Death Cult) are really good... but not really that current/hip/trendy.

i'd like to think the OP said that tongue-in-cheek. heavier, bleaker things had never really held much mass appeal. besides, aren't the 'hip' kids listening to some neon transient/beardo crap these days, and wearing empty wayfarer frames? |

I have stuff by both of them and considered them goth at the time but my 'gothness' evolved over time from the very tail end of punk visa vis Siouxsie, very very early All About Eve (before their first album), the Dammed and very early cure into Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Mission, Cult (just add some metal), various early EBM and Industrial bands and on into the likes of Evils Toy, X Marks the Pedwalk and even Haujobb. I don't know, goth kept evolving in different directions and the only way you could really 'tell' if it really was 'goth' was if it was danced too by other 'goths'. i.e. in my case that meant being played at the Electric Ballroom, Camden Palace or the Slimelight etc. and they played all sorts of stuff. Hendrixs version of All along the watch tower (probably followed by something from the Cult, Gene Loves Jezabel or even Aerosmith) was happily danced too at the Electric Ballroom. Slimelight had a B52 and Cramps fixation for a couple of years. Bit odd lots of 'old school' (i.e. crimped hair + hairsprayed hair) goths leaping about to Love shack, less so Rock the Casbah. Anyway.. here's a comprehensive list of music with goth tendencies from an old goth and friend: the alarm, alice in videoland, alien sex fiend, all about eve, all living fear, android lust, assemblage 23, asmodeus x, at 10 paces, ausgang, attrition, autumn, bauhaus, beatles, behind the scenes, billy idol, birthday party, bjork, black rebel motorcycle club, blade fetish, blonde redhead, blondie, bright eyes, bubblemen, burning image, buzz****s, c-tec, nick cave, carcrash international, johnny cash, christian death, the church, cinema strange, clan of xymox, the clash, patsy cline, cocteau twins, leonard cohen, coldplay, collide, complicity, corpus delicti, corrosion, covenant, covet, cramps, cranes, crass, creatures, cult, cure, curve, daisy chainsaw, dali's car, damned, daniel ash, danielle dax, das ich, david bowie, david vanian & the phantom chords, deadbolt, dead kennedys, death cult, death in june, death rock, depeche mode, diva destruction, doors, echo and the bunnymen, einsturzende neubauten, element, the essence, eva o, the exploited, 45 grave, the faint, faith and the muse, fear cult, fields of the nephilim, funhouse, garbage, garden of delight, gary numan, gene loves jezebel, goteki, goth, gothic rock, jack off jill, THE HATES, jimi hendrix, hocico, horatii, the horrors, ian mcculloch, icon of coil, interpol, james ray & the performance, jane jensen, janes addiction, jesus and mary chain, john lennon, john lydon, joy division, katy mcgrew, killing joke, killers, kommunity fk, ladytron, le tigre, london after midnight, love and rockets, love like blood, lush, march violets, mazzy star, mephisto walz, merry thoughts, milla, ministry, misery:lab, the mission uk, miss kittin, morrissey |
