I got a lot of use out of a tractor beam on my Osprey when I used to mine in cruisers.

depends on your prefence. If you are running a mid sec op you have several options.

1) tracker beam (also usefull in very hi sec) to full cans and wrecks.

2) Salvager to get rig components when the NPC's attack you (assuming you use drones to deal with them)

3) remote amour repairer to patch up your drones or mining buddies when something goes wrong.

cloak is freeking useless. when something comes in an targets you. you can cloack yes, but he will know were you were and come to you to kill you, thats low sec. in high sec it's more useless.

also you will be sitting next to a can if you are mining in a cruiser, not allowing you to cloak.

it's better to be alinged in the direction you want to go to for a speedy warp off.

In my last slot when I was new I threw in a assault missile launcher (no ammo I left a reload or 2 in the can) to help my drones kill the rats.

and this is usefull how? as your MINING drones need to travel too and from a roid to do the mining and getting the ore back to you.. they will be doing 80% of their time flying then... as for fighting drones they can also wait till rats are a bit closer..

as for the fitting on a spare high slot:

- if any missile slots available you can fit a launcher for more protection
- tractorbeam for looting rats without moving from position (if rats died within 20km)
- salvager to clean up the wrecks you made
- remote repairer (armor) for repping your drones if they got hit bad from the rats

To hazard a guess, I suppose if you were mining in low security space it'd allow you to mine at a greater distance from the warp in point - if you get sprung, you ditch the drones and peel out.

getting above your optimal range on your mining lasers thus not being able to use them seems a waste what so ever and not worth the trouble to just mine with your drones imo.. advise from me would then be: don't mine at all.
