Hi, as you all probably know, were setting up a wee fish tank in the office. there is a computer that monitors stuff, then connects to a PC and we can have it sending out email alerts etc etc etc but i also want to send a mail in the event of a power loss or network loss. the PC we are using will be a laptop running windows 2008. it will be connected to a local netowrk and a wireless network (for mail alerts in the event of power loss). the reason i need the alerts is because the laptop's AC power will be on the same circuit as the main pump (very important this is kept running) and the lan switch will be on a circuit with all the other crap thats needed for the tank. so if we lose AC power on the pump, it will mail us. if we lose power on the cleaning crap it will mail us. were just trying to add as many safety things and alerts as possible. so anyways, i have searched and searched and i can't find a program to do this. i also checked with the sceduled tasks things to mail when a specific eventID is logged, but searching for an eventID is dam hard and anoying. so anyone have any idea's or a method we could use ? thx /Shark ps : we update this thread quite offen, it's just the progress were making etc. |

Maybe look into a backup battery. Not sure if there is one that would work, but I am pretty sure a solid electrician could fix something up to kick on if the primary current gets shut off. I will ask one of my friends if he has any ideas. As for computer stuff, you have me beat  Slade |

Simply procure yourself a LARGE backup battery supply to connect a single air/filter/heater in order to keep the bear minimum running for an extended period of time. The cleaning aspect is not as important as keeping the water properly aired and heated. They can deal without lighting for awhile, and they will not suffer from lack of cleaning pumps for awhile.
Just make sure that pumps are cleaned and overflows are running smoothly in case of power failures, because you don't want a huge spill caused by clogged tubes. |

Many UPS systems (Uninterrupted Power Supply) or at least "high end" systems have included monitoring software that will run on a connected system.
A roommate had a system that would send him an email if power was lost, along with an estimated running time. The software also preformed auto-shutdowns before full loss and functions along the same vein.
Try checking with one of these hardware suppliers for an off the shelf solution?
Perhaps they would provide it for free if they were allowed to say "Proud Power Manager for CCP Games" ..
or if they didn't have to mention that they were providing solutions for a fish tank. |

Here's something that may help in the event of a complete failure of utility power. Symmetra® LX by APCThis is one of the best UPS systems on the market, and is geared towards a server environment. This bad boy should also be able to send you an e-mail/SMS/Page if utility power dumps out for *ANY* reason. I haven't gone over the specs, so it may be overkill for what you intend it for. Hopefully this will help you find a proper solution to the power concerns, if this doesn't fit the bill. APC is one of the best when it comes to a UPS solution. (My opinion, take it as you will. I know of a couple haters of APC gear.) Just something for you to look into. |

1) Get a cot and a mini-fridge. 2) Connect Lan to the room. 3) Obtain a mobile phone. 4) Obtain top of the line Mac Pro 5) Place all those objects in the tank room 6) Let me know when its done 7) Buy me a ticket to Iceland 8) I will watch over fish while playing EVE on my Mac Pro 9) I will use the mobile phone and call you in the event the power goes out  All jokes aside, good luck with the tank.... looks great. |

Do you have to run windows? Grab a jetway jnc91 mini itx board toss on a teeny wifi adapter, slap in a bootable thumbdrive with linux utilizing a couple simple daemons. One runs a power daemon watching a cheap UPS and the other watching your LAN, which are triggered by backup power/LAN link dead, and send the appropriate mail through the wireless. Or, if it HAS to be a standard laptop with windows, try the NDIS stuff. |

I use What's Up Gold to monitor my systems at work. It can monitor Windows logs / services, Unix syslogs, SNMP ... you name it, it can monitor it and alarm by email, text message ... etc. Almost infinitely tweakable and a great product. £850 for up to 25 devices (30 day trial avaiable to see if it does what you want) http://www.whatsupgold.com/ |

It looks like you're looking for one of two specific events to happen: 1) The laptop switches to internal battery power rather than AC power. 2) The LAN connection gets disconnected. You could look for (1) by getting one of your Python guys to write a script that will monitor WMI (see here, here and here) for the relevant power management events. You can also use WMI to look for (2), the network cable unplugged event (see here for an example that shows what WMI objects to interrogate). Once that is accomplished, you should be able to add in the relevant sections to either directly send email alerts, or to send information to your IT departments network monitoring package, which itself will handle the task of sending out the relevant alerts. |
