I need a computer upgrade. Since I'm thinking of going for an AMD 64-bit processor, I might as well give the new XP-64 trial version a go. (WOW a free operating system Laughing )
Has anyone used it? Are there any problems with it in EVE (or anything for that matter)
thanks for the help Smile

My guess would be that gaming on a 64 bit build would be rocky at best-especially this game. however if it doesn't there is always the 32 bit build to fall back on.

Making software work with 64 bit is not easy. You could theorize that it would just be a recompile, but reality is likely that your datastructures aren't aligned in a way that is friendly to a 64bit environment.

you will need to emulate a 32bits enviroment, maybe the xp 64 got something like that....it has to

Interesting. The processor is said to be backwards-compatable with 32-bit software. Maybe Its just windows doing what it does best. Crashing Laughing lol
The OS is just a beta version though, a fix will probably come out sooner or later...
Kaboom.. what system you running and what exactly happens?

Unlike the Itanium the Athlon 64 does NOT emulate a 32bit environment, it has a fully featured 32 bit mode, and indeed almost all the benchmarks you will see at the moment, most of which the FX-53 beats the P4EE by a nice margin, are the processor running in this 32bit mode.

That said, Windows 64 bit is a beta, and as such is even less stable than normal windows =/

I show about 9976 bytes for your sig, though, it does exceed the total pixel count limits set for the forums.

max total area cannot exceed 30,000 pixels (Xres * Yres) and yours at 343x107 = 36,701 exceeds the total pixel area limits.

as listed in the Forum faq
Quote:
The size lmits for signature graphics are:
Maximum height: 120 pixels
Maximum width: 400 pixels
Maximum file size: 15 kb
Maximum area: 30,000 pixels

Though not sure why they would say exceeds 15kb, instead of Exceeds 30k pixel area.

I've tried EVE on 64-bit - it sucks...

None of the 64-bit Windows versions actually use the 64-bit extensions when gaming to on fact you got yurself the performance of a normal 32-bit cpu... Bit useless if you see what you pay extra for those 64-bits :)

The Athlon has a 32 bit mode, but if you are in 64 bit mode, all of the drivers on your system need to be 64 bit drivers. 32 bit apps should work, I would think, but it is the drivers which are going to cause you grief.

Depends on your filesystem.
FAT16 vs. FAT32 vs. NTFS

Forget about the 64/32 bit stuff for EVE itself, I tried to run EVE but couldn't get DirectX 9.0b to work properly and by just that you can forget to run EVE :|

the 64bit xp beta is a novelty atm, the drivers arent very mature and as such your gaming performance will reflect this, as for stability i found it ok, i have an ati card and the drivers are generic whereas nvidia have supplied some drivers. i have an old nvidia card, ti4600 and it was approx 25-50% down on xp pro performance, unless your really curious dont bother with xp 64bit beta, i played with it for around 5-6 hours then ditched it. oh and eve wouldnt run for me, i wasnt really expecting it to so i never tried to fix the problem.

if this hasnt put you off and you still want to dabble with xp 64bit you will find some help here for drivers and the like,

Nice feedback (although my banner has been replaced for a month now, so you can stop talking about it Laughing)
On paper my computer upgrade consists of a new hard drive of 200Gb, old one is 30Gb. So installing another operating system isn't going to effect my performance too much Very Happy.
The AMD-64, self explanitory Very Happy.
A new case, a DVD-RW +/-. New mobo, probably a new sound card and maybe another 500Mb of RAM. I Already have 1Gb.

I'm keeping the gfx card, as its a beefy 256Mb FX 5600. I'll have to have a look at these drivers you were talking about.
Besides, its somthing new to tinker with when I'm boredLaughing
