Ok, so I was browsing the web the other day on my new MacPro and somehow I got this virus that downloaded a bunch of Avril Lavigne songs into iTunes along with the cover art for her album. Now, being a man, I don't like that kind of pansy music. Not that I hate it or anything, I'm just too cool to care really. So out of my COOLNESS I just ignored it and left it there.
So I was playing some eve tonight, poping some carebear-wanabees in 0.0, cuse that's just how I roll, when one of these whiny girl songs comes on. So I command-entered out to switch AWAY to some old-school metallica, you know, anything earlier than that reload crap. Note that I was NOT switching TO the girly music, I was getting RID of it.. But anyway, the cover art snapshot of this tart looking blonde with a red streak died into her hair was in the bottom corner of iTunes..
Now I don't know if you've noticed this, but eve has this trick of randomly grabbing something out of the display buffer and putting it up as a texture. So anyway, here I am jumping through a gate, and all of a sudden...
GIANT AVRIL IS FLOATING IN SPACE!!!!
Obviously my girlfriend, yes I have one, on account of I'm so manly, takes this opportunity to walk by.. and I'm flying around with..
GIANT AVRIL FLOATING IN SPACE!!!
"What are you doing?" she asks.
"I'm flying my spaceships!!!!" I scream, perfectly calm, nothing can break my cool.
But I'm thinking, this is totally throwing off my tough guy image. How am I supposed to convince all my buds that I'm the alpha dog with images of pre-pubescent teens floating around in my space?? I have sovereignty here for the love of chuck noris!!
CCP, please please please fix the texture issue on the Mac client, my sex life can't take much more!! |

*cough cough* I am trying very hard not too laugh ... OK I fail.
*Waits till the laughing fit has passed*
Have you filed a bug report? If not please do so that we can get this horrific bug fixed and save the manhood of all those concerned.
Now please excuse me while I go forward this to all of my friends, so that we can follow the standard internet meme and laugh at the misfortune of others.

I haven't laughed this hard all week... On a serious note, please make sure you file a bug report about this issue through this link. Screenshots of this would be valuable information, and highly entertaining into the bargain. I think this may be related to a different graphics glitch that is under investigation at the moment, but any and all information helps. ...I would recommend updating your anti-virus software btw. |

Lol.. I experienced something like that myself a couple days ago my desktop wallpaper plus desktop icons mapped to the box/grid surrounding the space I was in.
It persisted thru multiple jumps until I returned to full screen at which point everything returned to normal, it's very much like the bug that effected the fitting window which had random icons replacing the proper graphics.
Also currently have that kind of issue with the little map on the mission text.

like that one day during the tournament. i started the live stream in mplayer and switched to eve in fullscreen.
while i was in space i saw the video stream playing in the "upper" part of the space texture :) |

or another thing that happened twice now since boost patch: some space textures get replaced by some random parts from a vmware fusion instance i'm running on 2nd monitor with evemon and fitting tool.
leaving the ship in a weird looking cube :)
interestingly this happened only with a specific space decoration. i could jump into next system having graphics revert to normal but the next system with that deco had the "cube" again.
happened in like 3 systems while travelling 23 jumps. but i can't reproduce it yet. so no bug report. |

Edited by: Shin Chogan on 22/03/2008 13:29:52 Wow SIX CCP people responded to this thread .... wouldn't it be good if just ONE would actually post some information on the FPS problems, that so many of us have been facing on the Mac and Windows clients (I use both), since the last patch

I keep forgetting to take a screenshot, but it seems that this happens occasionally when I jump between constellations. I'm not 100% sure - it may have more to do with systems changing background color, but this begins and ends when jumping in/out of a system. Docking and undocking do NOT end the issue.
There is a cube around my ship of random textures. The game is still playable (it makes it hard to find the white boxes around objects when I need to align, though - heh) and I don't see any particular FPS drop.
I'll make sure to get a SS next time. |

Irrelevant to the issue I'm talking about ... putting aside the abysmal performance of the Mac Client for a second which is what your guide sets out to get the most from, there is something fundamentally wrong after the last patch. Pre patch my MacBook Pro running the premium client under Windows XP I've dropped from around 70 fps in space to about 20-30 with no other changes. Not only that cpu temperature has increased by a couple of degrees as has GPU temps (I set my fans to run full tilt using input remapper when playing eve). If I reboot into 10.5.2 and play I see the same kind of drop in frame rate except pre patch it was about 50 fps and post patch it is about 20fps. And I'm one of the lucky ones, many people are into single digit fps. Hell even my brand spanking new Mac Pro eight core with the 8800GT doesn't average more than about 40 fps in space ! |

Oh, that. I heard something about it, didn't realize it was so serious (mac fps seemed about the same to me when I first patched). I'm sure CCP knows about it, but maybe you should file a bug report. |

Try resetting your SMC and booting right into XP and running the windows client. It has been fixing a problem like that for me, but it might be a different problem. Look on Apple's site for SMC resetting steps for your computer. Sorry for the hijack. |

Yeah it doesn't hit the Mac's so bad since the performance while using cider is terrible but under windows, which makes far better use of the hardware, the degradation can be quite severe. It's not so bad on the MacBook Pro and Mac Pro since the hardware is quite powerful but for some people who are "only" playing with minimum spec (or below) like my old desktop PC it makes the game unplayable. Read the Many page threads in the Information Portal (The 1.1 patch feedback and the March 18th extended downtime feedback) as well as some threads in the Known Issues channel. There are a LOT of unhappy campers out there. BTW I've raised 2 tickets, one for the Mac client and one for the Windows one ... So far only feedback both to the tickets and to the forums from CCP is a complete stonewall, yet six of them can manage to post on this thread ... makes me a little hacked off If there had been even 1 post saying "yep we understand some of you are having problems and we are working on it" and then posted an update every day/every other day even if it is "Sorry nothing to report" people would be a lot happier. Coming from an IT support background I've found that even if the problem is not fixed letting the users know that it is still being looked at (even if in reality it isn't ) makes for a much happier user base. |

I might give that a try but if you look at the posts in the Known issues and the Information Portal channels lots of other non mac users are seeing this issue - I'd go with Occams razor here - there appears to be an inefficiency in this latest build that is causing a drop in fps. |

We are looking into the reported frame rate problems. The issue is we have no solid reproduction case for it. We also have conflicting results in that while some people report FPS reduction, others with the same cards report a gain in FPS, this added to the fact that their was no major changes in the Graphics engine in this patch makes it very hard to comment on or even find the issue that is causing some people to experience this.

Thanks CCP Lingorm - though may I suggest just a little more communication with the user base in the threads where this was supposed to be discussed would go along way. |

All I've had were fragments of my email text being used as texture maps instead of pop stars.
Its very weird to have your email become part of the very fabric of space, especially when the text gets very enlarged and then rotated at angles. |

Something very similar happened to me a few months ago, except the album artwork was from the Sandstorm EP by Darude. If you look up the cover for it, I think you'll realize how jarring that could be. I got on the forums and started ranting incoherently as well. |
