This post is about forum dynamics and the personalities I notice that contribute (or not) to posts in the forums. I realized that there were categories of people who read and post to forum threads.

1. Trolls. These are the types that post relatively useless things, consider arguments little and say things like "Can I have your stuff?". They are necessary in the forum population, I think to provide a well balanced Guassian curve.

2. Forum Gadflies. These are the people that read the subject of a post and assume they understand the full dialogue without actually reading. They often post without reading anything more than the Subject and their posts come across as shallow or illinformed. We will likely see a few who post in this thread.

3. Average Forum Member. These are the people who often agree or disagree with a point someone makes; they offer observations that may tip an argument one way or the other, but whose influence in a thread is otherwise typical.

4. Forum Genius. These are the people that consider what a poster has posted, and either torpedo a thread with such stunning logic, or move the masses to agree with a thread to the point where even CCP is moved (look at the creation of the Rorqual which came from a poster's suggestion for example.

I don't always agree with the posts I read, sometimes I argue for or against a position. But I always try to understand where a person is coming from. I find the "Can I have your stuff arguments" a reflection more on the respondant, rather than the original poster.

Has anyone else noticed personality types common to the forums that perhaps I've missed?

Hrm, interesting. I believe that there are several sub-categories to posters that we could extrapolate on:

5. Standard Bearers A Standard Bearer is passionate about one specific issue that he feels is important. Any topic he creates and any post he makes will be about this issue, bar none. If the thread he posts in has nothing to do with his specific issue, he will do his best to convert it to a discussion of that issue, and does not respond well to those who disagree with his viewpoint.

6. Fanboys A fanboy (or the more derogatory "fanboi") supports a figure of authority. Any criticism of anything that has something to do with that authority or its decisions will be met with hostility. Their arguments can have varying amounts of accuracy, as the validity of their argument is less important than its support for the authority figure.

7. Anti-Fanboy An anti-fanboy is, as expected, the exact opposite of a fanboy. Their purpose in life is to stir up controversy by pointing out inadequacies of flaws in a figure of authority. They are generally angry or bitter about a misdeed (real or perceived) committed by said authority in the past, and will often actively seek out the wrath of Fanboys.

8. EFT Warrior A distant relative of power-gamers, EFT Warriors base their arguments entirely on a program called EVE Fitting Tool that makes it easy to compile and compare the validity of ship setups. Though normal posters may use EFT, EFT Warriors are unique in the sense that they rely almost entirely on stats derived from the program to make their points, ignoring the context of the information when inconvenient to their viewpoint. This type occasionally cross-breeds with the Standard Bearers.

Sorry, I've seen much better breakdowns of forum archetypes.

The self appointed Devs' spokesperson - usually found making posts declaring that something is an exploit, then, when the GMs say it isn't, they make replies ala - "this is not the devs' intention(s)"

The Humourless Moron - has a complete lack of understanding of satire, very sensitive to any kind of light hearted criticism

The Eve online tough guy (EOTG) - similar to the internet tough guy, will be found mouthing off on the forums from the safety of his big Alliance. Will threaten wardecs if you disagree with his opinion, even if your comment is constructive and objective.

The Set up snob - will mercilessly scoff anyone posting a non-forum clique approved ship set up

The inventive ship fitter - will post a new ship a fitting that dares to defy the all seeing, all knowing forum clique, immediatley set upon by the set up snob

The boring old sea dog - 2003/4 player that bangs on and on about how things were better "back in the day". Will be found trying to discourage new players from continuing beyond their trial period.

The forum celebrity - insufferable cretins who think they are famous because the same people agree with them all the time, however, these same people usually turn out to be sockpuppets

The Drama queen - will make long posts about how they don't like eve anymore and are "QUITTING EVE FOREVAR", only to be found logging on 3 hours later.

The patch day crybaby - will make a very tearful post , lamenting the fact the servers are not yet up after patching, usually 5 seconds after the stated start-up time has been delayed.

The facepalmer - The normal, sensible member, who in the face of idiocy will quietly think N.T.S.A
