I seem to make more money mining and was just wondering if there is something I'm missing out on by not doing missions.

The mission rewards are the least you get from missions, there's also loot&salvage (especially selling salvage earns a lot), loyalty points and standing gains/losses.

Train the skill Salvaging and get a salvager module for your ship.
Not only is the loot in the wrecks valuable, you can salvage the wrecks to get mechanical/electrical junk that's used in the production of rigs (ship modifications). Even ships from level 1 missions will sometimes drop melted capacitor consoles or alloyed tritanium bars (both worth about 400k last I checked).

Also, train your Connections and Negotiation skills to get better mission rewards. Find agents with higher quality to get higher rewards. Especially seek agents from the Internal Security or Command divisions -- your local faction navy probably has such agents. By the end of your first day in EVE you can be flying a destroyer and attempting some level 2 missions.

Since you are mining, eventually you'll want to refine the ore into usable minerals. For perfect refining yields, you'll need ~6.67 standings with the station's corp. With no standings, you'll lose 5% of the refined minerals as a 'refining tax'.

If you're making better ISK through mining, by all means, keep doing it.

But, I don't know what level your missions are; I've heard of people pulling millions in with level 4 missions. Farming pirates is another option, too.

Standing has to be the number one reason to do missions, above and beyond any other ISK-making method. ISK is easy to come by, there are a wide range of methods to obtain it, it can be given freely from one player/corp to another, and most of the time it is not actually essential to have ISK to get the benefits of having it (e.g. ability to obtain bigger ships, better modules, etc).

However, standing is different - it must be obtained yourself, and it gives a number of non-trivial benefits that cannot be replicated through any other method. Also it takes ages to get (especially faction standing). I run missions now mainly for the standing boost - the money comes from elsewhere but they're the only place I can get my lovely standings.

Mining is more profitable than level 1 missions, period (unless you get lucky with high value salvage).

With level 2 missions, the mission rewards, bounties and salvage toghether are more profitable than mining unless you use a perfect mining setup (covetor or hulk, mining crystals, mining upgrades, perfect refine etc).

From level 3 on missioning is vastly more profitable than mining.

Note that this hasn't yet factored in the value of loyalty points. These will skew the calculation towards missioning even more. Not to mention that without missioning you'll be dependent on the good graces of a player corp if you ever want to use jumpclones.

Missions may be a bit boring alone, but can be fun in groups, it adds a reason to run missions.
The LP value really depends on what you can get in it and how much you'll sell it for.

When we could still sell nexus chips to NPCs, there was the nexus chip conversion for 1LP=1000 isks. But they took off the NPC buy orders because the amount of maney created was billions (look old market data in sinq laison for example, there was more thousands alpha chips sold at 8M isk each per day).
So, now, the conversion is gone, the LP value is totally variable, search the stuff you can get and see how much and how fast it sells.

Missions for your local navy (Amarr Navy, Federation Navy, etc...) are good to do because they have a lot of combat agents and their LP stores offer excellent faction ships.

Sure there is!
LP store, Jump Clones and since you like mining, if you get your standing up high enough from one of them they will keep their grubby little hands off the ore you process.

Also, keep in mind that you are probably getting sucky missions right now. Once you start getting missions lvl 3 & 4 you will be making tons of money from the rewards, loot and salvage.

It's not uncommon to make 1-3 mil off one mission.

Not to mention that mining is as exciting as watching grass grow...

In short, the answer is 'yes', there are plenty of reasons to do missions. Don't just count the isk you get as reward, or even bounties from killing the rats, loot the wrecks and salvage them. And, too, notice your standing with the corp going up; if you get a high enough standing, they don't tax you when you reprocess loot or refine ore. A good reason for a miner, I daresay :)

Ok, you've convinced me to do missions. They are an interesting way to break up mining - however, most combat ones end with me retreating as I face one unit I can't hurt and that tends to knock down my shield's quickly. I'm currently in a Tristan - Gallente Frigate. Do I have to wait to get a better ship class before I can take on combat missions, or is there something I'm missing?

A Tristan is more capable than you might think. Its fast, for one. Use that to your advantage, and "kite" the enemy ship at a distance. You can carry a small combat drone in the Tristan, so while you run just outside of the range of the enemy's guns, your drone can be busy nibbling at them until they pop. Use railguns, instead of blasters, and you might be able to hit them at longer ranges than they can hit you. Speed wins here, again. Sometimes it can take a while, but it works every time for most of those lvl 1 missions.

For t1 missions, use a destroyer and dont bother salvaging. Just get them out of the way asap, so you can move on to t2/t3s.

Yes - if you're specced for mining, even in a combat ship you'll have a very hard time doing combat missions.

Which leaves two options; either divert valuable training time away from your mining skills, or set up a second account and use that for missions. Or alternatively, skip combat missions completely and only do missions for agents who send you on mining, trade and courier missions.

That's funny because i trained mining barges and bought a retriever only to realise that mining by myself the money was pretty bad compared to doing missions and i constantly fell sleep at the keyboard as well Confused.

No such animal. Every agent gives you a combat mission every once in a while. And even if they didn't, there is a good chance that the storyline mission will be a combat mission. And I find that when you get a combat storyline mission they are usualy long and hard.

Bottom line, if you don't want to do combat missions, don't do missions.

It's extremely easy to turn down such missions.
