By British and rest of world standards, American Care - erm football is the Carebear version of Rugby. I saw the American rugby team against Scotland a few years back, the word pwnage did not do the match justice..... Why would the rest of the world care about American football anyway, not like they give a damn about rugby |

except that if you'd played football youd know that even with the pads its a lot more brutal than rugby. The players are bigger, stronger, and hit in ways that are illegal in rugby.

What this man says is actually quite true, most of the stuff you do in american football would get you sent off and maybe even banned in rugby, and even with all that armour and stuff its still far more brutal. Edit: but still not as brutal as aussie rules football |

Thats right, the last time I saw a game of American football they had all these referees throwing yellow hankies every time someone did something. In rugby, they only stamp on heads, arms, heads, legs, backs, chests, necks in a maul. While in a scrum they only throw punches or gouge eyes and ears. While tackling they only tend to grab balls or kick them.. yes, American football is soooooo brutal compared to Rugby. |

In the games of Rugby that I have actualy seen (been at the field - Muarryfield to be precise), I saw 3 broken limbs and some poor bastard got his SPINE crushed.
In my experience Rugby is more brutal. |

In rugby they only pull you off if you are bleeding so much that you can't see, or if you can't walk. Johnny Wilkinson once played a third of a game with a broken ankle - and I don't mean he limped around and whined. He drop kicked twelve points - all the points England had in the game - against Australia, on that ankle. |

Meh, in my experience I got hurt more playing American Football than I did in rugby, busted something in my knee playing rugby had problems with it ever since, busted my shoulder playing American Football and it hurts every day so... |

I don't really know too much about either rugby/amer. football, but I'm pretty sure I know why pads and such were introduced in the latter. Too many players were getting killed/crushed to death. In fact, from Wikipedia: Quote: From 1931 to 2006, the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research has reported 1,002 direct and 674 indirect fatalities
and Quote: The average NFL career lasts only 3.8 years.[3] Injuries sustained by football players are often permanent. Many former football players experience pain, sometimes severe, that lasts for the rest of their lives. Many players require surgery, even multiple surgeries, for injuries experienced years earlier.
This is with that padding. Now, anyone able to provide similar stats for Rugby without the padding? |

Maybe it is because the players wear the padding that they don't last long due to them disregarding their own safety. Now if two 120kg men run full-tilt into each other no amount of padding will help, you will break something. Rugby has those very strict contact rules for a reason, and that reason is not to have statistics like the ones american football has. |

Meh, the England squad seem to gyrate so violently between passably awesome and sucking horrendously I can barely keep up.
And enough with the American Football versus Rugby squabbling. They're different games, and are both alright. Although personally my hierarchy goes "Rugby Union > Rugby League > American Football" in that comparison. American Football is probably more violent, though, but also less physically exhausting- stamina is nowhere near as important in AF as it is in Rugby. |
