- Up on the walls of a besieged base with a thumper full of plasma and EMP(whatever the blue ones were called) 'nades.
- Sniper duels (and sniping those infils who thought you couldn't see them)
- Flying ahead of the main zerg in a mosi, picking off infantry
- AMS-mowing :D
- Being gunner for a good tank driver - XP-tastic

and many many more great moments....

One of the best games I've played.

I personally used to love the heavy weapons spec, the funniest thing was camping an air tower, so when an enemy mossie low on armor came back for resupply and repair, remote camera decimator into the mossie destroying it.

I was a rubish Max user, but seeing some peoples abilities were awesome. I especially used to love back door defenses, especially with the anti-infantry TR maxes when they were deployed spamming grenades into the corridor.

My favorite times were using my stealth suit and a pistol to kill unsuspecting enemies.

I also particularly like using that around bridges. Just walk through the river and surprise them from behind while they blockade the bridge.

One of the best parts of beta was when they screwed up the sentry guns, giving them infinite range. Nothing like flying around and being shot at by every gun on the continent that had a clear line of sight on you. Or being blasted by one from miles away that you couldn't possibly see, but it could see you.

Edit - the forum thread about it was called: "From the bowels of Hell: Satan's favorite new toy!"

I was stoked for Huxley, but the more it gets closer to final, the less I actually want to play it. It's looking more and more like a crappy Unreal Tournament, rather than the wartorn epic 400 player battles of Planetside.

I was Kibble (NC on Johari, then Markov). Highest rank I ever got was BR20 CR4, and I was rank 43 on dicepoints serverwide ratings at one point.

I flew Reavers a LOT, but also used Surgile + JH for a while. I REALLY miss this game.

Some of my most memorable gaming experiences are from this... 150vs150vs150 (DAMN YOU Gunuku! That base was always in conflict Laughing)

I loved the Liberator's front gun. Most people didn't think it was very good so I had MAXs deploy in front of me to kill me - only to get mowed down by my 30mm cannon Very Happy was good at killing Lightnings too

BFRs kind of ruined it though...

The thing that I liked most about planetside, is that every bit of damage helped. Ive gotten tons of BFR kills because they hit low hp and tried to run from my sniper. Its the same with all the vehicles.

Huxley looks alrighty, great eyecandy, but your against NPC's, which is pointless.....

Naa Decimators require your attention and they get some time to heal while the missile travels. Mines are a lot more effective for that.

Mines were also good to stick next to spitfires in crowded areas. Basically 1 mine won't kill a player, but a mine & an exploding spitfire together will ^^. It'll take out a MAX too. Best part of all is the green ring around the spitfire makes the mine look friendly rather then hostile.

Another favorite is probebly the rogue spitfires people sometimes placed on the vehical pads. 2 good sniper shots and the blast could take out a good 10 people.

Finally my favorite is the several times I snuck into orange alert bases the enemy captured only to kill the 2-3 people defending the CC "everyone's always in the hallways outside the CC" and retake the base. Sure you get instantly swarmed by 40 guys but it's totally worth a v-v-h!

mmmm, planetside.

I think that was the frist mmo i ever played. Started on Emerald as a TR. Went back a year or two later and played as NC on emerald. Great game.

My favorite moments were battles that happened in between bases. Particulary as one faction was pushed out of a base, and the two sides met half way between the two. Mmmm that was great.

Gunning for a good tank driver was pretty awesome as well.

I don't know why another company doesn't take a shot at a mmofps again. If its done right it would be insanely popular. I mean planetside wasn't perfect and at release (IIRC) it was fairly popular. pretty much anything pvp and mmo together is going to be popular.

One of my first MMOs as well.

Ah, the memories of CyssorPlanetside
I occasionally resub about once every six months. Provided you're on at peak times, there's still a good fight to be had, even if fights are down to brutal three-way stalemates that last for hours before one side relents.

Cyssor still takes forever to cap, some things never change.

Man this thread is really making me want to fire off a froob account. PS was the one FPS that could give me what I always wanted, a long pitched battle with thousands of shots fired, sometimes giving an inch, sometimes taking an inch. BF never really played out like that, nor any other WWII game/mod I ever played.

I loved playing Defense in a besieged base, but I always seemed to be in an AA MAX when I should have been manning the wall with thumper and plasma... or I was on the wall with thumper when I should have been in the basement with an AI MAX. Or I was chasing out the back door in an AI MAX when I should have been in AT clothes. Or I was the last guy still spawning in the tower after everyone else had ceded.

But those pitched battles that I loved so much about PS were also its downfall. (Among many other things). Once you're playing complete D in a base, you know it's only a matter of time before you lose it. You're just waiting for the CR5s to get their heads together and declare the new target. And if you do manage to defend, it means you got backhacked somewhere else, so you still lose.

You know, it just occurred to me, although it's likely been discussed before on the PS forums that I've never visited, that perhaps a bit of PvE in PS might ameliorate the standard flow of battle. PvE, even non-profit, might spread out the continental (planetary now?) populations; meaning that the major contested continent is no longer a matter of poplock, and there are greater populations on non-contested continents so quick back-hacks are harder to accomplish. Just a thought, and since I haven't played in a year and a half at least, my understanding of game mechanics might not be up to snuff.

Remember this:

Art of the MCG

It's funny ... just yesterday I got to thinking about this one and now here we have a PS Nostalgia thread.

This was my first PS character and I reused the name for EVE. Started off on Markov. Then quit when the LLU came out - came back on Emerald and got to CR5 there ... mostly with my own little 3 man squad ... I was always kind of a loner there ... Of course ... playing 3 accounts (two or 3 guys in a tank or Lib) I really couldn't squad with anyone else as I was to busy just managing my own characters ... I must have quit that game 8 times ... well ... nine now ...

The thing I really spent most of my time on was CEing our rear area bases and watching the map for little yellow flashes ... when the DuhEV's emasculated CE after that last big buff ... I was gone.

I think I ran around blowing gens and back hacking for a few days - just to show them the consequences of what they'd done but ... I was in a perpetual state of being ticked off and ... it wasn't doing my blood pressure any good ... So I left - and came here.

I still miss my Vanguard. One thing I loved about playing two characters was that I got my very own tank. I loved that thing.

I'm not even gonna get started on all the things SOE did wrong ... or what PS could have been ... to many hours already down the drain in futile efforts on the PS forums ... but it had really gone to hell in a hand basket a long time ago.

There at the end - I actually had long running arguments with people who insisted that the only thing that mattered was their kill counts and that whatever the stated rules of the game ... they judged their success by their own criteria. The DuhEV's over there indulged those kind of people ... and that's all they had left in the end. What strategic game there was ... had been reduced to Interfarming ...

*sigh*

But ... whatever ... that is still one heck of a video.

I was looking forward to Huxley myself ... when I first heard about it ... but ... have about the same impression as the earlier poster now.

Man ... I remember the first summer after PS came out ... 5 servers ... each with like 3 locked continents and several smaller battles going on. A swarm of people charging up a hill (below the N. bridge to Gunuku above the tower) ...

Games For Windows just did an article where they mentioned PS as having just evaporated ...

BFR's went a long way to ruining what that game was ... but the real problem was when they changed the pop lock rules. Before - you could have up to ... like ... 50% of the continent's population for one Empire. So - the two empires that wanted it the most and were the best organized at getting their people there - could squeeze out the third empire - and then accomplish something. Once they went to reserving 1/3rd of the pop for each side ... you had constant stalemates ... but ... anyways .. I wasn't going to get into all that ...

Damn but I loved that game when it first came out ...

*sigh*

PS was real good fun but the cave and bfr expansions didn't do a great deal for the overall game.

I have reactivated my acc a couple of times and the MCG vid does bring back fond memories if ever eve diverges the FPS way as a sepearte way to control planets the PS base cap way would definately be a good place to start ( - LLU )

Ah yes ... SOE gives up the code to CCP ... which randomizes the continents for each inhabitable planet and populates them with NPC civilian populations that will mine and make goods for the local factions (thus the Faction Navies etc. have a real economoic base).

Factional Warfare arrives in EVE as the 4 factions go to war over these resources (people ... cities).

And - you can launch HART's to drop Space Marines in, then land the new Assault Landing Craft to disembark the Tanks and Planetary Conquest comes to EVE.

Of course you'd have to pay for your Vanguard and the ammo that was dispensed from the Equipment Terminal's and Vehicle Silo's with ISK and someone would have to supply them.

At last you'd have the 50% FPS / 50% RPG that the PS web site always lied that it was ...

Ah ... sweet dreams ...

Oh yeah ... and all the people who have multiple millions of skill points and like to bully the new players could try their luck down on the surface where any FNG fresh out of the spawn tubes for the first time could shove a Jackhammer in their guts and blow them away ...

Harsh? You want to see HARSH?

*shrug*

Never happen ...

*sigh*
