Edited by: TimMc on 18/10/2007 13:04:23Probably in January I am going to replace my Motherboard, Processor, RAM, Hard Drive and Graphics Card. I am hoping that this computer will last me through university (next 4 years) with minimal upgrades, as in Uni the money would better be used for booze and computer games. I got a few questions for all you tech savvys... 1. Is Quad Core worth it? Currently I am looking at a 1333Mhz FSB Dual Core, how much of a difference in proformance is there from that to a 1066 Mhz FSB Quad Core? 2. I am going to get 4Gb of DDR2, but what speed would be optimal to the CPUs listed above? Do I just go off and get the fastest my motherboard will take? 3. I heard that there is going to be a Nvidia 8700GTX which will be DirectX 10.1 compatible. Any news on how less powerful this card will be? Will it play Crysis on max like the 8800GTX is supposibly ment to? Is there going to be a high=end card thats DirectX 10.1 compatible? Mainly I don't really want to blow alot of money on a card that is obsolete. Thanks, and any other advice you can throw will be much appreciated. Edit: Budget is around £1000. |

well ill say the obviouse, if you want it to last for the next 4 years with few to no upgrades then go for the best you can afford.
even if somthing does out perform the other parts, thats one part you wont have to think about upgrading at another point!
as i said, pretty obviouse but true none the less |

Iam pretty sure the 8700GTX will be geared towards notebooks..high end ones at that.. i used to work for an nvidia technology partner a few years ago, and still have ties with said company so i can do some poking around for any released information in realtion to that particular chip. Is quad core worth it.....well yes and no.. in order for it to work at its best the software you use will have be able to utilize all 4 cores in a way which breaks down process's and assigns them to the cores.. In the long run most applications / games will infact be capable of leaveraging the processor in this way...so i would say yes go for it, just dont expect much to be quicker until the software catch's up.. Ram...well how much do you want to spend is the question lol and what will your selected Mobo support (ddr2 / ddr3)..what ever it supports, if u have the cash, buy good named brand ram, low latency stuff like corsair twinx or if u have real deep pockets, corsair dominator. OCZ and kingston also have premium lines of ram. I cant really answer the ram question without first knowing what motherboard u are going with. Now crysis (hell to the friking yeah, i been waiting for this one for a long time too :P).. i would say without first talking to a few people at my old work, yes the chip (8700GTX) will run it, and run it well, iam not sure about max, but i would say u would have no dramas at something like 1280x1024, 8 aa, 16 af..iam basing this on the assumption that it will be geard towards high end laptops..which i suppose will rule it out of being available for desktops :(... In any case it will not be as powerfull at the 8800 GTX, nvidia will just be trying to fill a void in the market due to the performance of the 8600GT not packing enough punch with BER (bleeding edge release) games which utilize dx10..tradionaly, there mid cards where a little more toothy with newer games (6600gt, 7600gt ect)..not so with 8600gt and dx10 games. |

Are u looking at EE editions of the quad core processor ??
AFAIK only the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 uses the faster FSB and is 700mhz quicker than the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800..but is cheaper than the QX6800 ????
so is it quicker from what i can see yes...to be honest i sell AMD stuff so this question is best answered by and intel fanboi :) |

Ah ok, thanks for the pointers. Just to note, my monitor is 1680x1050 resolution... will the 8800GTX still be able to run that at max besides AA and AF (not much difference tbh between 4x and 16x). Motherboard has not been really decided, but looking at this atm: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-241-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=913 Do you think the new Quad Cores coming out in January (with 1333Mhz FSB and bigger cache) will be that stellar compared to the current generation? Worth the extra cash? Honestly I am hoping to only have to upgrade my graphics card in about 2-3 years time. |

Edited by: Bacci Galu on 18/10/2007 16:13:21 honestly i cant say yes or no to if they will have much better performance..as i specialize in AMD stuff..
the intel QX6850 has 1333mhz FSB and 2x4mb cache and is out now...
if you are suggesting intel is releasing something better than this, well i would sumise its is going to be faster, but it is best left to an intel fanboi to answer this question...
if u go the 8800gtx it will run anything its a monster lol..
I talked to a freind at my old workplace he said the 8700gtx is being released due to the dx10 revision (10.1) as a replacement for the 8600gt cards, as they are not doing so well with the new revision.
But it will will be a desktop release aswell and not limited to notebooks..
