Guide to cosmic anomalies

Okay most people have probably tried a few of these by now and found that a lot of them are pretty pointless. However some of them are actually very lucrative so here is a guide and some of the less well known facts about this new content.

You find these anomalies using the onboard scanner. They will be within 4au of a planet and the onboard scanner has a range of 5au. They can be turned on in the overview (under Celestial) so the easiest way to find them is to scan within 5au of each planet of the whole system to establish there are some to find, then set the range of the scanner to 750,000,000 (5au) and find a planet that the anomaly can be scanned from. Run a scan using the onboard scanner (you may need a few goes to pick up the harder ones, possibly 10 or more times) until you get a hit.

Now the cosmic anomaly will be listed with a signal strength and a distance. At 0 au distance the signal strength will either be 12.5, 2.5, 1.25, 0.625 or 0.3125. At a distance of 3.47 au the strength will be half of this and at 5 au it will be 0.37 times this so you can easily tell which strength of anomaly you have found. The lower the strength the harder the anomaly is and the less the chance of finding it on each run of the scanner is.

I think that the strength corresponds to the probability of finding it, so the lowest strength anomaly at max range will only have about a 1 in 10 chance of being detected in each 30s scan. You can also check what you have found by initiating and cancelling a warp to the hit which will cause the name of the site to appear on the map.

There are ten different types of anomaly for each rat type and 9 or 10 drone ones. The easiest 4 or 5 are available in high sec, the hardest 5 in 0.0 and the middle 5 in low sec (so there is some overlap). You can tell which level you have found by the true signal strength (what it would be at 0 au). There seems to be little difference between the different rat types, just each ship replaced by the equivalent class ship of the different rat type (i've only tried a couple that are not serpentis so I am not sure. So for serpentis and drones, the names and signal strengths are:

SS / Rat Site Name / Drone Site name

High Sec

12.5 / Serpentis Burrow / Drone Collection
2.5 / Serpentis Hideaway / Drone Gathering
1.25 / Serpentis Refuge / Drone Cluster
0.625 / Serpentis Den / Drone Gathering
0.3125 / ****** / ******** Not sure these exist

Low Sec

12.5 / Serpentis Den / Drone Gathering
2.5 / Serpentis Yard / Drone Surveillance
1.25 / Serpentis Rally Point / Drone Menagerie
0.625 / Serpentis Port / Drone Herd
0.3125 / Serpentis Hub / Drone Squad

0.0

12.5 / Serpentis Rally Point / Drone Menagerie
2.5 / Serpentis Port / Drone Herd
1.25 / Serpentis Hub / Drone Squad
0.625 / Serpentis Haven / Drone Patrol
0.3125 / Serpentis Sanctum / Done Horde (thx Kurst I)

For rats other than serpentis the names are the same but with serpentis replaced by the name of the faction.

Now most of the harder anomalies have a lot of missile batteries that pound you pretty quickly when you jump in and I normally warp in and out a couple of times whilst I clear these out. Generally these are hardly worth doing but it is an easy way to find a few battleships in low sec if you want to raise security status.

The hardest two in 0.0 (Haven and Sanctum) don't have these batteries and have an exceedingly high battleship count with about the same number of other ships.

Serpentis Sanctum contains dozens of Corelum Lords (they are mission rats unfortunately but they still have a 1.2M bounty) that appear in waves of up to 7 Lords with just a few other ships. As well as this, they all appear in the same place and they cannot use MWD whilst you can. I clear these out using an alt in a frigate who can take agro all day long (they cannot hit or catch you) and a full damage fit blasterthron. In this way you can literally be pumping 1000 dps into high bounty battleships virtually continuously for an hour. Bounties total about 40M and you do get plenty of 1M modules dropping and some decent named stuff occasionally. I have never seen any Shadow Serpentis or Officers in these anomalies, can anyone confirm if this is possible? For a low skill character + alt I think this is one of the best earners to be found in 0.0. Another possibility is getting a few of these anomalies in adjacent systems for a virtually perfect way of raising security status.

One final and very interesting fact that I was tempted to keep to myself, however I thought it would be quite interesting if this becomes this well known. The 0.0 anomalies are available in low sec systems with a true-sec rating of 0.05 or below. I do not have a complete list but from looking through Ombey's maps there only seem to be about 10 of these systems. So if you want 0.0 rats in low sec, you know where to go. Make sure you form an orderly queue!

EDIT : here are the low sec systems with 0.0 anomalies

Espigoure 0.0499 Ganoure Placid
Pemsah 0.0479 Ombil Aridia
Skarkon 0.0478 Eoldulf Molden Heath
Karan 0.0447 Selonat Aridia
Yekh 0.0444 Ombil Aridia
Balas 0.0436 Ombil Aridia
Vestouve 0.0426 Ganoure Placid
Sakht 0.0415 Fabai Aridia
Anath 0.0413 Fabai Aridia
Yiratal 0.0380 Ombil Aridia
Feshur 0.0355 Ombil Aridia
Egbinger 0.0346 Elfrard Molden Heath
Naga 0.0337 Fabai Aridia
Hophib 0.0291 Selonat Aridia

So to summarise, 0.3125 and 0.625 signal strength anomalies in 0.0 are very lucrative and as easy as pie with an alt (TBH these need balancing CCP), these can also be found in a tiny number of low sec systems.

I did get a True Sansha <something big> BS from Sanctum once. 13M Bounty and dropped a Slave Beta,a BPC and the tag iirc.

It was a real pain in somewhere behind to do solo in a domi tho. I burned a full cargo of 800s using dual T2 repper. Lucky for me I got several wrecks with 800s so I was towing a can around with spares.
yeah... I'm lazy and use my PvP domi for plexes.. Only change hardeners.

Generally speaking encounters have a small chance of a commander (e.g. Shadow, Domination, etc.) spawn in the final wave. I have never heard of someone getting an officer (e.g. Brokara, Estamel, etc.) spawn in an encounter though.

Yeah that guide about covers it. And told me some handy stuff I didn't know. All in all, imo I think it's more fun than belt ratting since you get the thrill of getting an exploration hit. What I do is that I first put out a multispec to check for deadspace sigs, then proceed to check for anomalies (just using directional scanner, then on-board scanner or just a quest-probe for high hit chance).

Yesterday I got 3x DG spawns from encounters in anomalies, which is much more lucrative than ratting with 5 others in a system.

So go out and check them out, it's fun :)

Most of the time it's not worth it. I only wish that we'd get a msg . The's not a commander here . Also Sanctum and heaven require a double rep/crystal xl tank if you're going solo.

On a sidenote: the sites seem to come in different shapes.
For example there seem to be 2 types of Guristas Sanctum, the one with all those ring-shaped thingies (usually 5x5 BS plus some small ships, easy to solo) and another one with 2 structures, a factory and a pirate station if i remember correctly. The guris spawn as soon as u shoot the pirate station, last time i did it the spawn was 10 BS and lots of smaller ships...I guess its the same for the other factions as well, unfortunately i can't remember if the base signal strength of the 2 were different.

Yeah you are right there do seem to be some different flavours, I am pretty sure I have had a single missile battery on a sanctum before. I've never even tried to solo a Sanctum but I am not surprised you need a pretty heavy tank, first time I saw seven Serpentis Lords warp in my eyes nearly popped out of my head. I had never even been to deep 0.0 or done lvl 3 missions at that point. Lets have more content like this in low sec and 0.0 pls CCP. There is some nice pirating potential with these anomalies as well as they are just that little bit more secure than belts thus lulling people into a false sense of security. Personally in low sec I pop my wrecks as I go to avoid leaving clues as to what I am doing.

I remember one of the first I did in 0.0 with my friend who had just started playing. He was taking agro in an Atron whilst I had gone to a GSC full of ammo in the neighbouring system (that is one problem with these, you use ammo on an industrial scale). This pirate came into my friends system, hit scan and saw about 30 Battleship wrecks with a 3 day old character in an atron flying around. He was just like wtf?

Did a bunch of these against the blood faction.

Bored silly, i only had a couple of battlecruisers in the area... but if you had the chop chop gank machine on the roll, you could easily clear these in 5 or so minutes each, as there repeating insta spawns.

I was averaging an area commander battleship every 10 or so... cruiser about every other 5..

Crystals/db med reps.. pos blueprints...

If your looking for something different.. aka the faction spawns... and not towering isk from generics, then go for it..

Take a gank snipe ship though, as like i said.. gets boring fast.

No message on warpin too.
7 turrets...
then 3xdrone bs +4xstrain frigs spawn
second wave is 4x bs +4xstrain frigs.
third a bunch of frigs, 3 strains.
fourth wave: 4 bs, 4 frigs, no strains.
fifth: 5 or 6 strain frigs, 7 bs O_O
lost my raven here... frack!
just kidding Razz
sixth: 4 bs, 3 frigs.
Seventh: No 7th.

New to these...how do you get the anomaly waves to come? I can sometimes do it by killing random stuff, but i don't know what to do exactly that makes the next wave come sometimes.

What do you mean?
Each type of anomaly has either X or Y things spawning?

Stupid question...
Er.... how do you give the anomalies names? Embarassed

I did a serpentis one in 0.0 with 0.2523 signal strength.
It had a few roids and two structures... Pirate and Factory Complex
As soon as I shot the structure named "Pirate Complex", a spawn appeared with some 5 Bs's, 4 cruisers,3 frigs.
I think I got in total 6 or 7 spawns with 5-7 BS on each wave.
By doing it solo in an ishtar, I finished it in about 2.5 hrs, yielded some 40mils in bounties and around 20-30mils on modules and salvage.
Shooting the structures did nothing, although after destroying the pirate complex one (took ages lol) the message "Dust and debris spews forth from the station as it quickly breaks apart" appeared but nothing happened.
So ummm... bleh Razz
