I've always loved the preying mantis but today I've seen the true awesome of this insect. Normally I just catch them eating grasshoppers, but this was way more.
I went into my garage earlier to find the carwash solution when I noticed a preying mantis in a web with nothing less than a Black Widow bearing down on him. I was about to kill the Widow myself when the mantis used his lightning fast kung fu grip and snared the widow and proceeded to eat it head first. I tried to grab my camera to film it but by the time I got back he was already on the last leg.
I pulled him out of the web and transplanted him to some plants I have on my deck and went about my business. Just checked up on the little guy just now and there he is snacking on a hornet with the half eaten bodies of 2 more by him.
He's a unstoppable killing machine and this just goes to show the coolness of these little guys.

Dying while getting laid seems like one of the better ways to go imho. Only downside is that you only score once ofc...

Oh, and it's praying mantis.

It's all in the details. Ordinarily I'd agree with you but having your head ripped off and getting eaten (literally...not the fun way) by your mate does not sound good...even if I am getting laid. In fact I think the head is removed to make the whole thing, uhm, work so the male doesn't even get his moment of pleasure.

How in the world Mother Nature ever came up with this method as a viable reproduction strategy I have no idea.

Well we all know how women get those late night cravings when they're pregnant. Personally if we had this as a human trait that'd be one hell of a population control.

Out of the dozen or so mantis's that I found over the weekend I think I spotted only one female and she was huge. Was almost the length of my hand.

And it actually is preying mantis. The term 'praying' mantis comes into effect because it's front legs/claws are always in a praying gesture.

And now Rocky (I named my little champ here) has also caught himself a massive locust. I've never seen one mantis eat so much in one day.

I think I read somewhere that the female only eats the male if she is really really hungry, and its not a normal occurance. I believe the article also said that if the male doesn't dismount, the female can't eat him if she is indeed hungry.

I lol'ed a little when I read that last part. Rolling Eyes

EDIT: Proof

Correct, they don't always get eaten, somehow managed to disregard that fact in my post. And yes, it is pretty funny. "Aren't you going to dismount?" "No thank you, I'm quite comfy back here". Can't stay forever though, and the longer he waits the hungrier she gets...

1: It is praying mantis, not preying. The word "mantis" means "prophet", so the name means "praying holy-person".

2: Although the female almost always tries to eat the male, it is by no means necessary. Most males actively try to avoid being eaten, and some even manage to succeed. It does not appear to be in any way biologically necessary.

3: Plural is "mantids", which sounds totally freaking awesome Very Happy

I realise it's Praying Mantis now, I only typed 'Preying' because I was in autopilot and the people before me had spelt it like that.

Gods of spelling, forgiveth me!

It doesn't matter how it's spelled, we're just discussing how cool they are!

BTW, I did a google search and it comes up both ways like I SAID it would.

Its actually a common mistake, people assume that its preying because the mantis is a predator (thus, preying on insects) rather than the true meaning derived by the manner in which it holds its forelimbs, thus praying.

Sigh. I'm going to sleep.

Tomorrow if I can find my camera to pc cord I'll post some pics of Rocky. I lost track of him the other day though. Theres about 7 mantises on my deck in front of the house that I've been keeping tabs on.

If only they would eat one another and form one giant insecting killing machine; such would be worth of fraps.
