What a crap program.

How come everytime the mainstream media makes a story on games and stuff they have to include the worst clishes ever? If you're going to make a story about something....atleast have journalists that knows what they are doing.Evil or Very Mad

Word cliche.

A clish on the otherhand is a mammal that are found in New Zealand. They were responsible for almost wiping out the population there as they are very dangerous with their tentacles. The tentacles are used for impaling and consuming humans...meaning they impale you and drink you. After the 'great purge' where the combined navy of Australia, New Zealand and China attacked their hive they have been considered extinct....but on rare occasions there are reported sightings and people have gone missing. We hope they arent building an underground hive because then we would be in trouble if they were to launch a suprise attack.

Ah! Is that what the film 'Clish of the Titans' is all about?

My Wild-Ass Guess: Cliches were spouted. Second Life was held up as an example of the ability for the everyman to use MMOs as a moneymaker. WoW was mentioned, probably no less than ten times. A lot of really poor or completely inaccurate information was treated like gold plated fact.

Y'know, the usual thing that happens with anything related to the mainstream media.

this is CNN we are talking about, they probably portrayed WoW and other MMO's exactly the same, like a addiction, and more then likely capitalized on the "warcrak" issue that keeps being brought up.

I just have to ask something. When I was visiting the US and watching the news, I got the feeling that the news anchors were playing a role. You know, fake smiles and people not being natural at all. It was very much like watching a movie with bad actors or something.

Here in sweden, the people doing the news are usually not acting very differently than ordinary people would (at least on SVT, TV4 is a bit more americanized).

It would be interesting to know if you americans have noticed this, or if you feel the way the people are doing the news are perfectly natural to you?

Judging from the looks of their trailer it actually looked interesting as they had that ceo dude from Funcom there as well as other clever people. However you learned nothing new, you might as well watch a Discovery channel documentary from the mid 90's.

Also, they had an idiot wow player there who explained how the point of wow wasnt about killing the dragon, it was about killing the dragon........with your friends. Basically he came off like wow was some type of EVE, the only thing I could think about was someone baiting him to the closest door and lure him into jumping into opening it only to be jumped by an angry blob of EVE players who were on the other side.

They also had this incredible dull cgi thingy. Where real idiot people dressed up as
wow characters and walked around this terrible pre rendered background. I think that part was supposed to be funny, but it just made me feel like slitting my wrist.

they did give off a major point in MMO's and that is in player-to-player cooperation.

Definately, I very rarely play non-online games now, its the fact your playing with/against someone else thats gives the online games an edge over standard games.

About what you expect from a group that was elected to cause Bush trouble and decided to lay down and die. If they ever grow a pair I expect their approval ratings to raise.

I know exactly what you mean, Jim. I'm a dual National UK/American (although I'm as English as fish and chips), and I spend my time roughly between both continents. I'll take the professionalism of the BBC over any other American network.

Check this video out if you have the time,

Jon Stewart on Crossfire

An American comedian and talk-show host appears on CNN's crossfire (a politics show), and does a fantastic critique of it. The show was cancelled later on. Apologies for thread derailment. It is partially relevant because it highlights some of the things that are wrong with the American media.

Im watching it now, and its very interesting and a bit scary. They dont even seem to understand what Jon Stewart is saying. They are blaming HIM for not asking serious questions on his COMEDY SHOW as some kind of defense to why they arent asking serious questions on their NEWS SHOW. Right? Thats scary.

Yeah, I guess this thread is getting derailed... its a really interesting topic though.

I'm glad you checked it out. In case you're having trouble picking up some of the references to JS, he hosts The Daily Show, which is first and foremost a comedy program dealing with news and current affairs satire.

I just had to link the vid because it was the perfect example of what you were talking about. The American media (i.e. Fox, CNN) has become theatre.

Im glad you did, I hadnt seen this before. There are lots of speculations about the american media, but it seems that a lot of americans are also becoming very critical to what they are being shown. Thats where a change must start.

At some point, I think things will become better, but right now its a bit scary to see that the worlds largest media are so controlling and manipulative.

Its like that Orwell novel... by controlling the media you control the peoples opinions as well. Stuff on the TV is easily accepted as the reality, even though it might not be.

Back on topic:

I watched this awhile ago, and while some of the details where very skewed, the overall message behind the program brought up some valid points, namely:

Arrow MMO's are approaching (if not already) the mainstream source of entertainment

Arrow Socializing / meeting people is becoming mainstream (ie: its no longer "weird" to meet people IRL or have RL relationships with people you meet IG)

Arrow An entirely new form of world-wide economy / market is brewing, RL currency -> IG currency and vice versa

Arrow Its only a matter of time where if advertising agencies want to be seen, or their products marketed, they will go first to the MMORPG, instead of the TV / Movies / Billboards, etc..
