I've played a caldari for about a week now and am groing increasingly unhappy with the way caldari ships work. Missiles are boring, using electronic warfare measures seems to mean specializing in it, the ships look stupid, many of the ships seem very specialized whereas i'd prefer hybridized designs.

What i want in the game is to PvP, in solo to small scale mostly. Maybe pirating, maybe mercenary work. Also trading. I don't want to be all out damage nor do i want to be all out defense or support. I don't really care to be in a huge vehicle, i'd rather stay medium to small. Long or close range doesn't matter.

What kind of char should i make? race, lineage etc? what kind would suit my wants?

Minmatar and Gallente are generally considered to have the most suitable PvP ships.

Minmatar - Projectile weapons use no cap. Versatile damage types.

Gallente - Blasters have the highest DPS in game.

Remember though that you can train any other races weapons and ships as well. Just cause you are Caldari does not mean you have gimped yourself.

Minmatar?

Speed tanking is never dull, some of the ships look very cool, many of them have hybrid missiles/guns systems (sometimes drones especially on the Typhoon), they have lots of ships which work for solo/small gang work.

You might want to try Gallente or Minmatar ships. Minmatar are by far the hardest ships to train for to fly well, but they have their advantages. Gallente can tank a bit better, you get to use drones, easier to train for, but lack in those special abilities of Minmatar ships, like speed or weapons that require no cap to shoot. Gun-ships require better player skills in terms if pvp to fly well. Might be more interesting for you to train to fly these.

It's been said. Minmatar or Gallente for PvP. I think that Gallente ships tend to be the better of the two for mission running, but YMMV. Minmatar take a while to train up.

Before you do anything drastic be sure to read the patch notes for Rev 2. There are lots of changes coming that could affect your choice.

Be wary of '"whaterver" ship ftw' statements though. EVE is a rock/paper/scissors game. Anyone can own anyone under a given set of circumstances.

Don't count out the Caldari and Amarr ships, they certainly have their place.

For solo PVP, I recommend Minmatar, their speed makes them the most survivable solo PVP ships. Get your perception as high as you can, next priorities are willpower and intelligence.

Once you know a lot about PVP, consider cross-training to Amarr (best tank) or Gallente (best gank). Caldari specialise in missiles and eletronic warfare, I have a faint suspicion you wouldn't like them much.

EW can be vicious if used correctly. Dont underestimate it.

That said, Caldari arent just missiles. They use missiles/rails. Check the Cormorant bonuses. Check the Rohk bonuses. Check the Ferox bonuses. Check the Moa bonuses. The list goes on.

Now I wont sit here and blow smoke up your tailpipe about how good Caldari are in PVP. Missiles do indeed suck major wang for PVP. Shield tanking does indeed suck maajor wang in PVP. But you also dont want to underestimate a Caldari pilot or you may be sitting there getting wailed on thinking "Gee, I sure wish I could target this guy...."

If it were me I would recommend Gallente is your not happpy with Caldari.
