Well i've just spent the last few hours running an exploration site that someone on Dnightmares exploration database discribed as "Beyond 10/10"

First room was something on the order of 20 BS, 15-20 cruisers, and around 10 frigs, some of them warp scrambleing, some webbing.

My Enyo handled it no problems dispite accidentley shooting the rat that triggers a new spawn (around 5bs, 3-4cru, 2-3fri) Twice.

One of the gang got poped however and because the newley spawned rats were agroing randomley we warped out

I warped back in to check i could still tank it once, came back, regrouped, and i want in a thrid time....

...And swiftley DIED because the complex dident load for a full 20-30 seconds on landing inside it.

While thinking about what could be sent in to tank the while i get my loot out, a friend of mine, who shall just be refeared to as "the monkey" warps into the plex in a shuttle...

...And invents the concept of Shuttle Tanking.

Yup, we ran the whole first level of the plex with the shuttle as the tank.

The second level proved to be a problem, too much for even the Mighty Gallente Shuttle to handle.
The problem? Lag. loading the complex took longer than it took the rats to lockon and kill the shuttles.
So we used Four shuttles, half drew agro and died, the other two lived and speedtanked the spawn.

Then anouther problem, one that no amount of shuttles can handle: A single, lone Serpentis Nightmare was lobbing out one heavy missile every 5 seconds or so, the missiles were the only thing that could even touch the shuttle but eventuely, it broke them, and in too quick a time to kill the nightmare.

The solution? Four Shuttles, and an Atron!

This is Atron tanking. ugh

The 4 shuttles go in first, get lagged out, and die.
Meanwhile the Atron go's in, orbits the rats at 170km and uses its mighty T1 armor repairer to tank the single ship (in a spawn of 40-50)thats capeable of killing it.

Ran the plex, made 50m between us, good fun.

However: shuttles are clearley overpowerd, Serpentis need missiles cos they can't hit ****, and CCP need to reduce the number of structures (there were over 150) in there exploration sites so we don't lag out and die on entry. Cool

And one would think speedtanks are already good enough in PvP... but in PvE, they are automatic win apparently Laughing

Perhaps you could try a Templar next time. It's an Amarr fighter used by carriers. Rolling Eyes

I agree on the structures in missions/complexes....they ned to be reduced. ALOT. Confused

ok, correct me if i'm wrong, but dont serpentis do the most dps and have the meanest ewar?
if you were standing still they would have ripped you too pieces. So maybe speed tanking serpentis is meant to happen?

fir example: gurisats: low dps, high accuracy.

You joke about it, but the shuttle tank is the most effective tank you can use on cosmos lv4 missions lol.

Enter plex with a hord of ships that can tank the spawn for atleast 1min.
Have the shuttle burn away from the npcs at its massive 500ms a sec lol.

And when it is far enougth away (ushally +60km) you can warp your ships out, and return back in safe knowing that the shuttle is now been chased by the entire hostile spawn for the next 150km and you can simply pick off everything that moves without been shot once.

Winner.
I have been useing the shuttle tank for a good few months now , i claim i invented it :P

One thing I'm curious about, surely this only works on rats that don't use missiles, correct?
I never really paid attention to rat missiles before, so don't know the common range of rat weaponry, but the nightmare in our plex was shooting what appeared to be heavies (hax) or cruise at over 170km range, each hit slowly but surely killing the shuttle, and that was just one rat.

I would guess that its not possible with rats like guristas, as even if rat missiles have a max range, we found that moving beyond 200km some rats would lose agro on the shuttle.

Serpentis have moved up my list of favorite rats considerably.

Thats about the size of it yeah, missles = no good for this in most cases as you have to stay within about 170km to keep the npcs intreasted in your lil shuttle mobile, if they lose intreast you simply warp the combat ships out and move the shuttle back into range untill they love it again.

It works well against amarr npc's

NPC ships usually have a higher multiplier for missile speed and missile flight time as you can possibly get without rigs as a normal pod pilot, but they do have a maximum flight time, and therefore a maximum range.
The bad news is that the maxrange of their missiles is usually close to or even higher as their "attack range" (the range at that they engage at or disengage from the locked target).
