Yo. Just a quick one, has anybody played Eve in Afghanistan. I am on a six month tour there, just wondering if I was the first. If so, another first for Eve!

Awesome stuff! Very Happy

I'm curious how you've managed to play Eve over there - I'm embarking on a similar "holiday experience" in a month or so to one of the less luxurious resorts, so I think its pretty unlikely I'll be able to manage it. Sad

I am about ready to conclude such a vacation and I must admit I was never able to play one single minute of EVE while I was over here for 10 months. Part of that problem, however, was obtaining a reliable internet connection, then as soon as I had done so my computer died and I didn't have the finances to buy another, so I was out of luck. Good luck on your "vacation" and stay safe and hydrated, you'll be just fine.

I have plenty of friends that played battlefield 2 with us while on 'vacation' in the 'Stan. I don't see why EVE would be any different.Very Happy

I deployed in 2003/2004 and tried to get the base to invest in gaming access, but the Comm folks were severely uninterested. I probably could of forced the issue through, but I wanted good professional relations with the Comm folks (job related), so decided to not force the issue on them. I did try to convince the Comm folks in friendly fashion, but they were not interested (they refused to see it as anything except more work for themseleves....)

Base leadership was mildly interested. Anything that you can offer to ease the bordom will get a friendly hearing.

COMM's main "real" concern was running a game like Eve through their military network and security issue.

What I suggested, was that the base contract with locals, perhaps an internet cafe owner, to get some lines run to the base for such access (Yes, its an investment. But not that big when you think of how much is already spent on troop well being....). Let the troops plug their own personal laptops in, and/or provide some from the base.

Assuming the fee was not to extreme, a fair number of troops would be happy to pay a moderate fee for access for gaming.

The base military network had a variety of games loaded, all approved for off duty use. My own shop (Air Force Emergency Management (The Chemical Warfare Defense guys)) regularly played against EOD (The Bomb disposal guys), each from our respective building when off duty. However, no gaming connection to the outside world past the edge of the base.

Then and now, my opinion is that on-line gaming would be great for deployed personel who like computer games. Well worth a base investment for troop recreation.

Part of the problem is I'm a Brit - trust me, from experience, your signals guys are the ultimate in open-mindedness compared to ours!

Another problem comes is that all our welfare net terminals are provided by contractors, we don't have the same access to 3rd party providers as US forces do. To be honest, I can't see security having much of an impact seeing as our net access is stand alone.

I don't see why the contractors simply can't provide wireless access points for each of the camps to use your own laptop on - but obviously thats above my pay scale and undoubtably they have some extremly bone and technically incorrect reason why they can't do that. Rolling Eyes Wink

The worst you can do is ask about it and try and get it passed up the chain. I deployed to the other hot and sandy place earlier in the year and despite spending some time at Shaibiza noone was too keen on the wireless interweb idea, or even terminals that you could jack your own laptops into, possibly due to the civi contracters who run the internet cabins and terminals. Might as well ask though, at worst you'll be told to **** off. However you will need a laptop to run Eve as the computers supplied are... less than adequate. Depends where you're going though... If you're off to Kabul then you could possibly knock up a decent wireless reciever, sit somewhere high up in the camp and tap away as you steal bandwidth. If you're deploying further south (Helmand) I doubt you'll have very much spare time, and you won't want to be playing Eve.

Good luck mate, keep your head down.
