So basically here's my story.
About a month and 2 weeks back I started with a trial account and progressed from there. Today I have about 800,000 skill points and a thorax with about 36 million isk. Now don’t get me wrong I probably got all this stuff underhand. Ill describe my EVE life from the start. Trial account era I joined a small close knit corp. after skipping half the tutorial (BIG oops) and proceeded from there. The CEO gave me a small frigate which I was highly pleased with (I’ve forgotten the name but it's the interceptor gallente class ship) in the trial account time I trained skills 24/7 in order to be ready for the rest of the universe. My training ground was Adacyne and to this day I love that system but that’s enough of that, I'm rambling, back to the story. The day before my trial account I got kicked from the corp. for being a jerk. I'd had a flame war with another member and then ignored him :P and also the other grounds were that I was a waste of resources. Guess I could have helped that but imo I didn't. Being kicked from the corp. turned out to be fortunate as I was picked up by another corp. which as I was offline from the trial account for about two weeks died a death. Basically I think the whole corp. fizzled out about 3 1-2 y old characters donated a bunch of cash to the corp. and made me CEO, and the rest left. Signing up for a full account I was awed - badgers and itty5's all stashed in a corp. hangar that had one member - me. I proceeded to sell the lot. I got about 70m isk from this and probably could have got more if I sold all the items. After doing this and reaping the rewards I left - in a brand new Vexor, trying to haul the high value items that I had had the foresight to bring with me. I sold these for another 30 mil isk and I had a grand total of 100 million isk. I marvelled at the fortune and quickly decided to spend it; on new equipment skills and other things. At this point I also decided to join a pirate corp. but had no luck - 3 mil SP minimum the corp. channel told me. So I joined a newb training corp.; hell I need it and yes I use the present tense because that was about 15 days ago. Present day and I look back and realise what a fool I’ve been. I’m left with the grand total I’ve written down at the top, not much.
The point of me writing this is for me to ask a few questions. How do I set up my ship for pvp effectively? What items should I use? What systems should I hunt in? In fact what ship should I be using? Although I love this game I can’t quite seem to grasp the underlying concepts of EVE-online. It has me dumbfounded. Plunk me in front of any other MMORPG and I’ll happily level to 60 or 20 or whatever other max level is. I’ll happily drive round in the worst beta weekend event I’ve ever participated in just to put off returning to EVE A.K.A my gaming failure. Please give me the light. I NEED help. What should I be doing? Now I’m sure that ill get a few flame posts back but as long as someone tells me what to do I’m fine that’s all I want. But please remember I’m not a MMORPG newb but I’m still an EVE newb that aspires to higher things so leave out All abbreviations tell me what my tactics should be and also what things I should or should not attack.
Thanks in advance. BTW don’t forget the questions at the top of the paragraph above this.

Edited by: Aeaus on 20/02/2006 02:08:07 Best thing I could say at the moment is look around for the crime and punishment forum or make an offer to be sidekick to a pirate, and or that you're a newbie looking to become a pirate.
As for going out on your own. First pve for a bit with a fast ship, learn how to fly, how transversal, etc works. Just remember to use a small and fast ship with which it's hard for you to beat the npcs. That at least will give you the closest thing to pvp without actually pvping. This will also build up a good security status for you, so you don't appear as a pirate until you've pirated for a while.
Then look around the map for a low security system with a bit of activity, ensure there's no gate camp and no "pirate threat."
Then hop from belt to belt looking for a target, do not engage anywhere else as sentry guns will destroy you. Once you find a target proceed to approach him (don't target just yet) and perhaps fire open the npcs, when you are within confterable attacking range just let all hell loose, once you got the target into hull, convo and negociate a ransom (as you get more experienced you'll realize which fees to charge). Don't spend more then thirty seconds on the ransom, and watch local for more guys entering, and watch for other guys warping in, if this happens just kill him. If he or she pays you a ransom, take all guns off and let the target go.
Now for some vexor setups and tactics.
3 x Medium Nosferatu 2 x light neutron blaster (Anti Matter)
1 x 10Mn AB / MWD 1 x scrambler (if using a 10mn AB then use a 20km one, if using a 10mn MWD then go for the 7.5km one) 1 x utility [more on this later]
3 x hardeners [more on this later] 1 x medium armor rep
You want to remain hardened against the local npcs weakest resistances. If this makes no sense then look at it this way, the guys npcing will be trying to hit the npcs for the most damage possible, thus you will be hit by those same weapons, if you are hardened against them, then less damage gets to you =) Use http://npc.elfarto.com/index.php to find out which npcs are weakest to what damage (armor). If you want to migrate then just stick in three adaptive nano membranes and train up the compensation skills, this will require doing less work but won't work as well.
Now the utility slot is a bit more complex, generally you'll want a webifier there, but you might want to swap that out for a tracking disruptor if you're fighting against larger turret based targets. You'll be practically unhitable except for their drones.
Here's how I would attack with this vexor setup (if it fits that is)...
Warp from belt to belt looking for a victim, try to sneak up as close as possible before making a direct charge. Once you're within 20km or so you can target and have your drones attack, once you're within 10km put on your nosferatus, and once within 7.5 your scrambler. If you're fairly slow or if your target is small get much closer before attacking, you don't want them to warp off. After this it should be pretty straight forward. You should be able to take about 100DPS coming your way, so be sure not to engage anything that will go right past that (ships like megathrons, AC tempests, etc are bad because they hit hard and hit up close, you want to pick on long range ships whenever possible). Also, if using a MWD use it sparingly, otherwise you become too easy of a target to hit.
Also, remember that you can't warp to gate or station for fifteen minutes after commiting a hostile act without getting destroyed, and you can only pirate in .4 and below.
Also, don't start attacking battleships immediately, you might lose =) |

Your questions could take books to answer, but i'll try to give some general advice.
It all depends on what you want to do in this game. You have to choose one thing you like and specialise in it, simply because of the way your character levels up. There are different skills for industrial, trading and pvp pilots and in pvp there are also a lot of sub-categories. One character simply doesn't have the time to be proficient in everything, and that is a big plus in my opinion as a new character is not terribly outclassed by "older" players.
Because of the way a character levels up, you should aim to have high attributes where it suits you. For a combat char, perception and willpower are the important stuff,as they define the amount of training time that needs to be spent in skills related to weapons and flying new ships. Intelligence and memory is the other attribute "pair", more useful to industrial players but also useful to a PvP pilot as well. There are a ton of "support" skills that give better stats to any ship you fly, but a lot of them are mem/intel based.
I have been playing this game for almost a year and a half and at the moment i have 100mil in my wallet, partly because i get bored doing trade runs and/or hunting NPCs and partly because i don't have enough time to play. However, that goes to show that the amount of money you have is a decent start for any new character. I'd suggest you train up your learning skills,as they increase your attributes and will result in faster skill training in the future. After that is done, start training for small to medium sized ships that have some decent firepower, like cruisers and tech2 frigates (interceptors and assault ships).
If you can already fly them, then work on your support skills to make fitting and using them easier for you. For example, train engineering and electronics to lvl4 or lvl5, as they will increase the available powergrid and cpu of any ship you fly. Weapon upgrades also helps a lot with fitting a ship. If you use small and fast ships invest in your navigation skills, as speed is your way of avoiding damage in them. If you like bigger stuff then you are going to be easier to shoot, so train the skills needed to tank the incoming damage and so on.
Generally, try to form an idea of each ship's strengths and train the skills needed to make it even better in that field.
In EvE there are no character classes like in a "traditional" RPG. Each ship is like a character class, designed to do different things, and you can fly ANY ship you want as long as you take the time to train the neccessary skills.
Last but not least, if you can speak Greek like your name suggests join the following channel ingame: Maza
We are all Greeks there, just tell the guys i sent you and someone will guide you further. |

Hi there, 1) check ship setups for good fittings etc 2) check map for active players/jumps in the last hour 3) always move about in low sec you should be able to tell if theres any victims in the first 5 minutes anyways.
Try low sec systems close to choke points, dead end systems or those near popular market hubs. Thorax is still a good ship but if your only looking for barges/indy's in belts then you might want to use a fast frigate.
Wouldnt be in such a rush to pirate, once your -5.0 your stuck in low sec and it will take a long time to regain sec status in anything less than a BS. |
