I just got a look at the slide presentation that CCP game at NetGames '05. Its an interesting read, and gives some nice insight into what is under the hood of this game :)

Slides available here

Comments on this.
p2: UMMORPG - are you using this term now also? hmpf
"Avoid sharding at all costs" - shame about the china shard then isn't it.

p6: nice hardware layout! But you use Win2k and MS SQL?!?!?! oh dear...

p9 onwards: interesting slides on "MachoNet"

p20: Future of Eve- expected numbers of subs on shards... 25K on london, 30k on china. your expecting the china version of the game to be bigger that the "rest of world" version.

EVE Mobile - now that REALLY got my attention. What is the intended functionality of a Mobile phone for eve - connection protocols? Any information or ideas would be most interesting to hear!

About predicting more people online concurrently in China is respectable because it's all one time-zone.

Eve mobile, I'm guessing, would initially be "offline" trainable skills. Also, I know in a game I played called Mankind you could actually get a beeper service if one of your systems was under attack, so I see no reason why they could let you do instant messaging via phones or irc-style communications as well as alerting you to goings-on in game.

Still pretty cool read.

Reading through it, it seems that CCP devs are either very very smart, or they just get brilliant ideas while drunk... because MachoNet is awesome :D

eve china is going to be licensed by CCP to a chinesse company to run for chinesse players (totally seperate from the rest of the world) - the eve (rest of the world TQ) game has the potential to get u to 200,000 active paying accounts if promoted right.

The presentation looks very good

Anything in there about speeding up the complex economics and maths engine to a) drive dynamic markets b) allow value adding production from players of NPC trade goods via manufacturing or factory slots ie taking wheat and converting into bread for specialised markets b) milk into dairy products into cheese for mining outposts c) taking crash test dummies and planetary vechiles and turning them into pilotless ground vechiles (then adding arms caches and some electronics and turning em into Unpiloted ground attack vechiles for launching an armed invasion of youre rival alliances outlying planet colonies ?
