So ok, I just threw two missile racks on my Merlin....and I blowing thru everything in sight. The dmg they do is just insane, my Autocannons do just a fraction of the dmg the Missiles do. he missiles seem to be very accurate at close range too.
So what are the disadvantages? Expensive? not really considering the slow firing rate. There must be something later on that makes less reliable. |

* Missiles do no hit directly * Missiles can be countered by "defender missiles" * Missiles, especially big missiles are slow * Missiles have only 1 skill per type of missiles, while gunnery skills excist to boost your gun damage.
Lateron you will notice missiles are useless in PvP (person versus person) fights on somewhat larger distance. Short distance (~15km) they rock. |

WHAT?? Autocannons on a Merlin? You should fit hybrid guns (Railguns)...but don`t rely on missiles alone (unless you fly a Kestrel) |

Slow firing rate, and slow flight speed. They are just slow. Period. Missiles might seem like they do insane damage now, but the further up the ship tree you get the more you'll see the problems missiles users have at taking on targets their own size. You have to be very close to actually hit anything and as you'll one day see, they're utterly useless in fleet combat because of their pathetic flight speed and poor DOT rate. Couple this with the problem of Rail Guns being crap, the result is Caldari are more or less useless in any form of ranged combat and thus have no role in fleet combat, while the bloody Amarr on the other hand...bah I'll quit rambling now. |

Edited by: Brej Donierik on 12/03/2005 23:56:39 Yup, they are slow and don't really have the range.
For frigates, missiles are pretty good, but cruisers and up you will have to pay attention to the difference between fighting at close range and fighting at long range.
For frigates, the difference is 5 km vs. 15 km, no big deal, but for cruisers and battleships it is 10-15km vs. 80-120 km. That's when you notice that small missiles don't even reach that far, and the bigger missiles that do, take a looong time to get there. And they're so slow that the other person can outrun them with a MWD, or they have enough time observing them that they can time a smartbomb perfectly to neutralize your missiles just as they get in range.
Your autocannons are short-range weapons; hopefully you're paying attention to their range and fight in close proximity so you can hit with them; their rate of fire x damage should be quite nasty. If you prefer staying at distance, use rails instead. |
