Ah, mister, a clear case of "bug stuck to camera drone lens", if I ever saw one... just bump two of your camera drones together to squish it, or just replace the camera drone. |

I think they are developer easter eggs. You have to have the camera either on the right angle or looking at the right object to see them.
One of the lvl 1 rogue drone missions does the same thing, and in one of the minmatar epic arc missions (I think?), if you tilt the camera to the right angle a weird amarrian robot statue at least 500km tall blinks into existance and cups the mission area in the palm of its hand.
I almost shat my pants when that one happened. |

Mining the asteroid triggers the rogue drone spawns in this mission. You can also see one of these models attached to a rogue drone in "Alluring Emanations".
Entirely speculation, but I suspect this model is an artefact of one of the earlier revisions of EVE Online's mission trigger system. The "bug" is attached to a particular object (in this case, the mercium asteroid, in Alluring Emanations it's attached to a drone). When an action is taken against the thing the bug is "guarding", the bug spawns the appropriate response. In this mission, it's a small group of rogue drones, in Alluring Emanations it's a great swarm of drones.
There's a lot of technical debt in this game, and I suspect this primitive version of a mission trigger is an example of something that will keep some poor sucker occupied for a few weeks back in Reykjavik.
Of course I didn't get the job, so I wish the incumbent all the best :)
