Apple always did a lot of pampering. Windows actually learned from apple (sort of, as they do it wrong).
But Apple's purpose is not pampering (Windows purpose is). Apple's purpose is to provide a user experience that is as detached as possible from the technical details. And concepts like "file" and "directory" are considered technical details that the user should ideally not be concerned with.
With Lion they'll take it up a notch. They are pushing toward a paradigm where you do not see the files and directories and not even know they exist (much less where they are).
In the future you would not be able to browse disks and directories at all (except, of course, with "advanced" tools or "hidden" commands or from the command line).
