So if CCP wanted to sue for posting videos of fleet fights I guess they could, but other than that, pretty much no relation to eve. |

Well, the US is currently trying it in Britain - a British student had a site with links to copied games/music/etc and the US now demands his extradition based on US law. Because the DNS server are in the US Source: http://www.heise.de/tp/artikel/35/35055/1.html (German, use translate). |

CCP does business internationally, so it is subject to (or can take advantage of) the laws of all countries they do business in. EDIT: From what I've heard, the above bill essentially says that any "digital performance" of copyrighted material is illegal. EVE is a copyrighted work, so any "digital performance" of EVE would therefore be subject to the above bill. It means that PvP videos, Clear Skies, video tutorials, video reviews, etc... are considered copyright infringement. If the above bill goes into law, CCP could prosecute any of us who ever posted a video containing EVE content online. EDIT2: not that they would do so. But there might be developers out there who would prosecute people who do video reviews that casts the game in a negative light, or prosecute people who post a "Let's Play" online. I should mention that the bill is INTENDED to be used against those who post music videos online or rip music and post it onto youtube. |

I doubt CCP would openly prosecute people who are providing them free advertising. Because that's what player videos are... its free advertising. Happy customers make videos, and show this to their friends and maybe their friend plays for 1 month before quitting. Yup.
It would mean that CCP would have to go after people, the government won't step in for them unless they start the ball rolling. Likely would have no effect on anything. Still though things regarding the internet tend to die in Congress. |

I don't believe the U.S. has any right to demand extradition for something like that. The proposed bill amendment is primarily designed for the prosecution of copyright infringement against the film and music industries. I don't see how it would apply to eve online or this forum. I agree with the poster above that the subject causes headaches. I had to read it 3 or 4 times to figure out what you were asking. I recommend that it is changed to say, "Will this U.S. bill, if passed, affect the forums here?" |

USA is the only place in the world, where you can sue weapon manufacturer after realizing that sticking cruise missile up to your own b-hole wasn't that great idea afterall.
And hey! The hilarious part was that you could actually win in court if the user manual didn't clearly explaing products health hazards while used to above-mentioned purpose.

Since, such videos on youtube serve to advertise the game, I doubt they'll be looking for lawsuits. |

I highly doubt this would get passed, and even if it did get passed it would hardly be enforced for several reasons:
1. The fact that attempting to trace the origin locations of anything on the internet to begin with is extremely difficult. 2. This is basically the corporate lobbyists trying to get the US government to save their clients time and money by forcing the govt. to hunt down semi-copyright abusers instead of, you know, ACTUAL CRIMINALS. 3. The average Joe who learns that his funny internet videos are now gone because of copyright infringement, and who can be arrested for data on his hard drive, is unlikely to vote for the asshat who does vote for this bill again. 4. If the copyright-stealer lives anywhere aside from the US the effort-reward ratio would be so low that most govt's wouldn't even bother helping the US. 5. Unless they're making or losing money, why would the corporations care about infringement? 6. It was only introduced, it's not exactly been ratified, and given the current mess that Congress is in I bet it will be shelved for several months while more important crap is enacted, and even then this is such a silly attemped violation of Free Speech and Fair Use rights that I don't honestly think it would be passed even if the proposing party had both houses. |

The US is increasingly becoming a government looking for any reason to fine or imprison an individual for some of the pettiest things the government can come up with to criminalize. Most of these types of laws are money grabbers for the government to try and make up for a large budget shortfall, as well as appeasing to greedy corporate lobbyists that in turn, line the pockets of the so called, "public servants" with campaign contributions. It's all about the Benjamens. |

Two words - 'fair use'. That is entirely unaffected. As such, reviews, etc, will still be entirely legal under the amended bill, even in the US. |

Good luck for an Icelandic based company to sue anyone outside the US using US law. The words "lauging stock" come to mind. And if it comes to a point where US law becomes "international law" i can only imagine that the word "revolution" won't be far away. |

No no no and NO! Revolution is not an option. Let me explain to you why... US law is like giant forum troll which is slowly driving everyone insane. It has answer to every question and can justify unjustified actions to become justified unjustified actions without any problem at all. US law is there to milk money from those who make money to make money for those who milk money from those who make money. It is also there to protect the ones who need protection from people who are protected by law which they are not willing to follow. When you combine these 2 facts, you get criminals stealing your money and not getting convicted, because facts were with you, but he had your money and more expensive lawyer. This is a fact and can not be proven false(!)!11. Now... if you live in USA, you should prolly think about moving to Iceland. I heard that there is some very cheap hillside properties available at the moment. Constant floor heating and occasional lava attractions belong to the prices. Area offers free hot water and very limited air trafic. EvE fanfest is near and buyers get free nonflammable box of carebeer for supporting Icelandic convernment at these hard times. Now you are probably thinking - what did this have to do with the US law becoming "international law" or why there can not be revolution to counter that? Has this guy totally lost it, like mental hospital case of some kind - or more like the mental sort of worst mental kinds there are? Well... the short answer is yes not yet, but yet let me still explain. If we pretend that you moved to Iceland anyways and bought that nice hillside hut from center of the volcano. Would it be nice to know that Iceland, with all your weath and iskies burning in lava stream, has working US justice department, where Icelandic covernment is waiting to hear your claims. Obviously you could use lawyer, but as you're broke and shot missiles towards goonies capitalblob in game, getting one doesn't look very promising. Thankfully CCP and Icelandic government have made arrangement which allows your kind of people to make deal to avoid jail, legal fees and perhaps even help you to get enough money for plane ticket back to USA. Afterall you did burn your house and went for the insurance scam (logs don't lie). Anyways that is how you end up signing up 10 year contract to become EvE Online's volunteer 23,5/7 rookie channel q&a person. As u can see... Revolution is not an answer. It would just hurt those new players who only want to ask: "why is that red cross blinking in my overview?" |
