One idea could be to have 'claims'. Anyone who starts to mine a rock and not leave it for more than so many seconds has claim to that lode.
Anyone who comes along so many seconds after the first miner (just in case two people grab the same rock) then they can be zapped without CONCORD taking an interest.
This could sort out a lot of the bot miners who start at one end of the belt and hoover everything up in their path.
This wouldn't be against the lore because anyone mining my stuff is basically emptying my can. |

Edited by: Myfanwy Heimdal on 19/06/2011 18:21:08 I always think of that Pink Floyd song from their last real album together which has the line "get off my rock".
Besides, it's nothing but bad manners digging someone else's lode. Then again, I grew up in an age when gentlemen opened doors and gave up their seats for me on the omnibus as they tipped their hat. |

What a fantastically good idea and well formulated too. ... and by good, I mean horrible!!! |

this has nothing todo with an anti-bot strategy. it takes the authors of the bot software possibly 3 lines of code to prevent the behaviour you are describing. rather what it is is you being negativly overwhelmed by the competition and "mining pvp"... |

Actually. Not at all.
But I do get your point. |

Interesting thought. I think something as simple as if you try to start a convo with them and you don't get a reply in 15 minutes you can *declare* them a bot and space them without CONCORD interference. |

It's not gonna work. Botters can simply assign multiple mining ships to equal amounts of roids. The best way to combat botting is to hunt them down, petition them, gank them, and ban them. It's an on-going war that never ends, but it has to be done. |

It's worse than that.. You can be attacked for accidentally mining a rock you couldn't tell was already being mined. This opens the door for some to take advantage of a phantom laser exploit. You did know that it's possible to mine an asteroid and not have a laser show on purpose right? |

This is fail cause how will this stop bot miners, it will only help them. In the short run bots will mine less, but in the long run the fact that they can run without rl intervention and can log in first would mean they could claim stake on the most rocks.
Also you would be introducing an exploit that a lot of empire pirates would use. |

I suggest that we remove concord sanctions for killing any ship with a mining bonus, and the stations refuse to let any ships dock that have committed "aggression" against an asteroid |

Which would quickly result in a bug where miner would be classed as roid agressors |
