The US only decided to get involved in Europe after everybody else had bombed the crap out of each other and pretty much all industrial capacity was destroyed (and only then because they got bombed once themselves). After the failed winter invasion of Russia, the Germans were on the back foot already. They (the US) also did it to make sure that Russia wasn't able to take over all of Europe from the falling German Empire. Yup, I just went there.

I wonder if the average americans actually know how many times the british asked for help, all the time being turned down by the U.S. Finally the russians got the upperhand + Pearl Harbor happened and boom - now the U.S. decides to actually do something. It was the russians, and ironicly with the help of decision making from germans and japanese, that ended WW2. I'd say the U.S. won in one way, their industry wasn't bombed to hell and they'd finally get the upperhand on the germans in that regard. Since it's such a fun subject, and it was mentioned; China will (financially) be the strongest power in the world in less than a decade. Military the U.S. is still ahead, but China also owns alot of the U.S. loans..
