you will notice that this timer will end at 5 PDT on the 6th. However at this exact time at E3, Sony will be having their 2011 Press Conference. Does this mean that Eve will be displaying Dust @ E3? Will the technology to be used for for Dust > Eve be shown with Sony? Is there no connection at all? what do ya'll think? |

I think internet spaceships are more interesting than console shooters. |

Interesting thought, who knows. On the other hand, even though I like PS3 much better than 360, Sony really screwed up with their account protection this year... like, 3 times already? Plus, PSN never was as stable as xboxlive when it comes to multiplayer. Hm, aw, whatever, we'll see. |

nice to know console games lifespan last typically a year to two at most.
CCP knows their devoted sub base will play an xbox to keep their planets safe from loosing a few thousand isk of assets.~
Microsoft never releases XBL DLC content for free so if CCP plans some addons for DUST there is always a payment to be made. |

PS3 also charges for DLCs we just don't pay to access the net like you xbox lovers do. It's funny how you guys feel happy with the Xbox when you pay twice for internet use on it. Once thru your provider then thru Microsoft. Not to mention that you can't watch Blue-ray on it and have to get a separate player. Also, the PS3 also does 3D. So if you already have a Blue-ray player and want to do 3D you'll not only have to get the TV but also a 3D Blue-ray player when PS3 users just need the TV. Even with the latest hacking PS3 is still way better then Xbox and we save alot of money to spend on Eve. |

CCP already has a proper software distribution system up and running, not likely they'll rely on PSN for updates and such. |

I think you'll probably find that this timer isn't meant to coincide with an E3 release directly to the second. I'm going to use my common sense and in a total stab in the dark say that this is when we'll see the Dust website actually launch with some info on it.
CCP will have probably already released info about Dust514 at E3 before this point. |

OK, hold it right there! Before this thread again dissolves into the typical nerd fanboi posturing-fest, how about some actual info? For a complete console noob, how does getting access to the internet actually work with the two systems? Is accessing online multiplayer games ONLY possible through the Micro$hit and/or Phony online portals? That would suck. How much do they cost? Also CCP, you better make this game run halfway OK with the mouse/keyboard adapters out there. I´ll be damned if I play a FPS with this stupid controller. |

No, but there's roughly zero incentive not to go through those services since they hold your online identity and your friends list and provide a handy neat repository of server lists and all the other auxiliary services you'd want in your multiplayer game. Quote: How much do they cost?
XBL — $$$ PSN — Nothing. Quote: Also CCP, you better make this game run halfway OK with the mouse/keyboard adapters out there.
Adapters? Why? They can use mice and keyboards out the gate… |

So why do I see all those USB/PS2 keyboard&mouse adapters out there? I thought the consoles only provide their proprietary controller ports. Thanks for the info. |

Yup, it all goes through PSN/Live, a good thing actually, you can't pirate and properly play stolen online games on consoles. You can play on PS3 without paying anything... except for game itself, and 360 requires a gold account to play online. It's about 8 bucks per months or 50 for year-long subscribe. Not the kind of money people should "bawww" about.\ And developers can't, as I know, somehow "tweak" "mouse/keyboard adapters", those things working via special hardware and have nothing to do with game code. |

They all have USB ports these days and handle standard HID input devices (because acronym redundancy is win!) the way you'd expect them… …the problem is that the games generally don't care about those devices — they're programmed to respond to the controller, not to keyboard/mouse input. What those adapters do (I suspect) is convert KB&M input into controller input. So you're getting the same kind of control you'd get from a controller, only you get it from something your hands are more familiar with. It's not something the game can really "support" — it will only see it as a normal controller, after all. Personally, I'm also sceptical about it being any better than using a controller, since the input has to be translated and since the game control schemes are (usually) designed around having two (or more) analogue inputs and 16 buttons. A keyboard will certainly give you the buttons, but you'll miss out on an analogue input and the one you do have has to simulate an input that operates on completely different principles (the absolute position of mice, as opposed to the relative-to-centre position of control sticks). So, that "why?" is really two questions at once, sloppily mushed together: why try to support an adapter that is designed around the idea that it's not something you support, and why not support the direct KB&M input that modern consoles are capable of (support that is built into the Unreal engine)? |
