Okay,
I have an alt that im doing nothing with. I think I created the second account little early because I was so focused on my first account trying to figure out what to do with him.
The main is a mission runner with skills really focused into DPS and AMARR ships in general.
The Alt I want to be a good source of income or maybe use him and get that bad security status. lol
Whats best for a 1st alt do you think? Orca pilot? Industry in general? Mining for income? PVP?
Just looking for some ideas to brainstorm after. |

If your main is already a mission runner, then mining is going to be a step backwards as far as isk earning is concerned.
As I see it, you have two choices: turn your alt into a PVP character and use your main to supply him with ships, or use your alt to assist your mission running income.
If you are going to use your alt for supplemental income, you have quite a few options: * Get into a ship for looting/ salvaging/ remote repairs/ gang boosting/ added DPS. Anything you do to speed up your mission running means more isk/hr. It does mean paying attention to two screens at once. * Go into trade. Get accounting and broker relations to get the best possible prices for your loot. Perhaps get refining and determine if you can get more isk selling your loot directly or selling the minerals. Start station trading: put up buy orders for items cheap. When they fill, put up sell orders for a higher price. * Industry: Start with building ammo for your main. Choose other T1 items to build from your trading experience. * T2 production after you are very comfortable with T1 production. It is a large skill investment to do invention, but that barrier to entry means the margins are usually better. * PI * Datacore Farming
You have to ask yourself if the added income you get from the above activities is worth the added effort and the additional plex/subscription fee. If so, good. If not, then you should have turned your alt into a PVP character. |

Edited by: Elbie Klep on 05/06/2011 18:14:22 EVE is a complex game and things are rarely simple. For example, if you choose to be a trader, you will need more than just market skills (social). You will need hauling (transport, freighter) and mission running (to get NPC standings to 6.0+ to minimize order costs).
I have two avatars, both with 70+m SPs. They both do a lot of the same things. If I had it to do over again I would have 6 avatars with 25m SPs, each specialized for doing a particular thing. There are two reasons for this...
First, the specialization would minimize overlap and my training time would be used more efficiently. IOW, each avatar would be L5 at everything relevant to its niche. The niches usually have steps in them, like regular vs ice mining or BS vs. Marauder missions, so you don't need to do everything at once.
Second, It is easier to manage the multiplexing of skill training. You can get one avatar to superstar status fairly quickly and you won't have any guns-and-butter problems pausing its skills to do an alt. With the 70m SP avatars, there was always something else I needed to advance those general purpose characters, so I never got around to doing alts and they just sit in market hubs now for prices.
So my advice would be:
1. Focus each alt on a single avocation among: mining/refining, hauling, combat, trading, manufacturing and research, and exploration. That order is probably not bad for a new player because the first two don't need much time and they are a natural starting point. Also, by the time you are ready for exploration (wormholes, COSMOS, whatever) you will probably be dual boxing anyway.
2. With three avatars per account, you want to avoid the guns-and-butter thing, so be careful which avatars are together. I would group {trading, combat, exploration} and {mining, hauling, manufacturing}. That allows you to skill up two fairly complimentary avocations at a time. |
