Not sure why CCP closed the last thread. This is a valid dicussion of particular interest to the Market Discussions forum.

Original dicussion

You can close it again, but that does suggest censorship of a subject which has never been stated as banned from discussion.

A summary of the previous discussion; cosmoray offered to publish his full API (no reason stated). Vaerah stated this may breach the privacy of other parties, as cosmo issues collateral based loans, and his full API would allow access to his ingame mails. The discussion has progressed to whether this is a breach of the EULA. It's possible the matter is under current petiton, which would explain locking the thread, but the debate is of some importance to a portion of the community that conducts transactions based on trust and reputation. So... stepping away from a specific discussion of the EULA, it seems fair to allow it to continue. Obviously provided it doesn't descend into personal attacks.

If there is some reason this discussion isn't allowed, a GM statement would be appreciated for clarification.

I agree. That queer that suggested I don't know anything (I think it was AC155, he's whack like that) deserves a riposte. You're a jerk, sir, a jerk. So stuff you (not you AC, lube you).

It seems like a pretty obvious position. If you are in possession if information that was given to you with the understanding that information would be kept quiet. Then giving someone the access allowing them to view that information is a privacy issue. The problem is, everything in EVE is not ours to determine if it can be disclosed or not.

From a real world Legal sense it doesn't stand a chance in any court because the information being disclosed is not owned by the Person A (the one who gave the private information to Person B) or Person B (The one who disclosed or gave the ability to disclose that information to the public). It's extremely cut and dry, neither person A or person B have any legal claim over the information so its an instant dismiss.

In the terms of EVE Online Community, Security of information alone with Transparency is a balancing act. The issue is transparency and privacy are in direct conflict with each other.

People want Transparency, but they want Security of their investments. Not to harp on it, but EBANK was in the same boat, in order to be as Transparent as possible a Spreadsheet needed to be made that did/was being updated in real time. The problem is, the Sheet was generated by EBANK, so people instantly dismissed it as fabricated information. The type of Transparency people want/demand instantly removes the security of information people who invest might not want to disclose to the public. There has to be a medium in which personal investment information is separated from the raw information. So that the public entity can offer complete transparency without the privacy of it's investors being crapped on.

The issue becomes trust of the service used to separate the raw information from the information acceptable enough to the public to be considered transparent. I have it on good authority that such a system is already being developed and is already mostly in place, but has a lot of rough edges. It's developed by several well known MD users, and being developed with accordance to real life standards, but also addressing EVE issues thats real life doesn't have to deal with. If this technology will be used to allow on the fly audits of finances, or offer up assessments to the public has yet to be determined by the developers.
