I'll throw three tips in:

+Don't be afraid of the age/scar amount, they make you look more like a human and less like a mannequin.
+Practice! There's no hurry.
+Ultra high light levels kinda ruin some pictures I've seem, you want a moderate amount of light and shade to complement your character.

practice on your alts

Very important.

Create a new alt, if you don't like it, scrap it and start again. Only when you're happy do your main one.

Or you could just make your character awesome.

There's a limit to what you can adjust and those limits vary depending on which race.

So no matter what you do some races just won't look awesome to you.

So best bet is choose the race you want to be then do the best you can with the limitations of the system.

just try to be unique. think difrent dont follow the masses. look at mine. i played alot with the light. most poeple have dark image's mines bright. it makes a big difrence with the looks. and what you want your avatar to look like. mystirieus, happy, sad, evil or good. its all about the light.!

I'm really impressed with the character creator in general, but there are two (female) hair styles in particular that could use some tweaking..the two hairdos which are longer than shoulder length look really bugged. Is this working as intended?

If you zoom.. don't use your mousewheel, zoom with LMB+RMB+mousemovements. You get smoother zoom.

Well I'm a photographer if you can pick it out. I more or less grabbed one of my prints from a shoot and used that as a guide.

As far as lighting goes. Knock yourself out. Yes there is rules but rules are made to be broken. Get creative. Quite often in my photography I use a single light source.

whilst I am a victim of the dodgy interface CCP originally had (I do have better portraits) I'm still happy with what I done. Probably spent about an hour on it.

Use very simple clothes or zoom into your face since most clothes colors match very horribly

the creation of the character itself is fairly intuitive, you just have to spend some time and not rush, remember that there will only one more chance.
After creating your char the most important is the attitude that it should reflect his character, not limited to the poses, backgrounds and lighting by default, you can change the whole facial expression, do smile, move her eyebrows and eyes, and whatever you want, make it funny, dark or without emotion. is good to know they have the chance to change.

Hair at this time always looks false (bald does not count). It would take up too much of your system resources to have it look and behave as if it's real. So they do the best they can.

When trying to get one section of the face right, be sure to play with the adjacent sections. The level and shape of surrounding areas can geratly effect how the part you are concentrating on looks.

I found the random button to be very useful just to get a basic template to work from. Randomize until a picture strikes you then improve it.

Imperfections make the face more real. Don't be afraid of scarring or aging to add a bit of wear. I have seen a lot of potentially good characters look like "Woody" because they just look too perfect...and this "fake".

Lighting, lighting, lighting. Half my time was my character creation, the other half was lighting and positioning. Though your characetr is a 3-d model, the picture is 2-d. Take the time to adjust your lights and position so the light will show the topography of your face and make is seem more 3-d when the picture is taken. My avatar has a LOT of hills and valleys, but they didn't show utnil he was well lit.

I am pretty pleased with how he came out, but my only regret is not positioning the camera better. I would have liked to have been more centered if I could, but I am reluctant to change that with a new picture. He might not come out the same. Oh, I'll try, since I can have his portrait right beside me while doing it, but sometimes you settle for close enough. Centering isn't the worst thing in a picture.

The final photos turn out fine. Just appears that on the moving mannequin on creation the hair is a bit too "lively" Very Happy

My tidbit for the day - on the final photo screen, you can actually (dragging the chin) open the mouth and see the teeth.

My personal contribution to all these tips:
Hit "random" often and have patience.
Oh and, lighting and using the right background is somewhat important.

Make sure you use every part of the editor, spend a lot of time working on the eyes, keep in mind proportions whenever you change a feature and remember to go over the cheeks and brows after working on the eyes.

Profiles shots don't really show your character as a character unless it's a close up. Tends to make you look like an extra.

I like my avatar, but just wish I could open up the eyes a little more, but with my race and bloodline it does seem to be that the 'slit' type eyes is a natural and genetic thing..

But even so, the eyes on mine have gone very small and squinting..

Is there any way I could use lighting, or perhaps make up or something to make the eyes appear less 'chinese'?
