Hai! I think it was Garmonation 8 I've been watching, the guy is pro, taking out like 2-3 bs or 5+ BC gangs solo in a Maelstrom. I never realised how sexy this ship is until now. I imagine he is using a setup similar to this - Solo Mael so for now that's my fit. I'm using standard blue pill boosters and a LG crystal set is on my wish list. Tanking 1100 (1500 overheated). So I get the whole tank bit but no mwd or web? How does he hit stuff? A single shieldcane or any fast BC and under should ruin your day in this thing right? Was he just lucky with all those fights? Clearly I'm missing something and am in need of enlightenment... Evil or Very Mad

"legendary" PvPers aside, Maelstrom is one of the worst possible choices for solo PvP.

The main limiting factors are - slow locking, slow moving, slow accelerating. You need room for MWD, scramble/disruptor, heavy cap injector.

In the end, a proper phoon or dominix with 1-2 heavy neuts and 2x plates will make short work of the Mael

Making the Maelstrom effective as a solo PVP ship requires throwing lots of isk at it in the form of implants, some faction mods, and boosters. And even then it will still be wrecked 1v1 by a conventional T2 fitted neut Domi, or a Curse, or a Pilgrim, or a 5 AC/3 Neut 'Phoon, etc...

Not only am I not sure, you're right, but I'd love to hear what ship you'd suggest that doesn't have weakspots.

Maelstrom is one of the most enjoyable ships I know of for solo.

A couple things:

Whether to fit a mwd or not--if you don't fit one, your ship will have an engagement range of around 40km with awesome falloff, but your real dps range will be much smaller. On the other hand, unless you get jumped by a bunch of snipers, short range for a bs is long range for everyone else. Because of this, WHEN you get ganked (this ship is designed and invites ganks and nothing else really) everyone in their right mind will close to <2km with you, and someone will scram you immediately, so a mwd might not help.

On the other hand, it's pretty much common practice to fit a mwd, especially in 0.0. But if you meet a gatecamp you'll be insta-webbed and jammed anyway, and like I said your engagement range is so huge already, so you might be able to get away with not using one.

On fitting a web or so--If you're not going to fit a mwd, you at least need either: 1. a number of tacklers you can depend on, or 2. a freakin web, preferably faction. Since you said "solo" then you are crazy and yes you need a web.

On those deadspace mods--You should get rid of at least one them, honestly. A faction web could keep you alive, and maaaybe one other mod to avoid using a fitting mod in your lows, but I think you need to understand that this ship will get ganked as soon as anyone with enough friends sees you. In solo pvp, you lose ships a lot. If you do work with a gang after all, then your problem is getting a tier3 bs into a fight without slowing your gang down too much. I've seen very good players fit an i-stab or a nano on their mael for that purpose.

Also, 3 damage mods+1 TE would work better. You need dps, and your range is already gonna be big enough. Another TE won't help you hit anything that gets under your guns, which is the real issue.

I can think of 1 scenario where Mael may be a good choice for solo - docking games.

No MWD needed, all you need is strong tank for 3 minutes and strong dps. Kill 1 of the station campers and redock.

Almost certainly most/all the vids you see are with crystal implants and blue pill. Here is another one I remember: Madhouse
Also shows blue pill and crystals can make the hyperion a beast too, and I believe with entirely t2 mods other than the implants and pill.

I'd say try hard to stick with hugging a station or hugging a gate so you can deaggress when things get under your guns. I think a web would help a lot as well.

That's a Machariel in that video not a Maelstrom. I doubt a mael could even get close to performing like the mach did in Garmonation 8.
