Goooood Day' I am a relatively novice player with admittedly, a lack of experience in terms of, well, a lot, but i continue to play EVE with the prospect and hope that just one day, i might be able to become a CEO or a part of something bigger with the ability to participate effectively in large scale fleet/territorial operations. Granted, we all understand that EVE like all other entertainment with a rating assigned to it, is but a game, but we can't deny the fact that like everything and anything in the world, to improve, it requires investment of time and dedication to some degree. What gets to me is everytime i lurk in the EVE forums, or similar forums for that matter, i see players who in response to someone who might have taken a more serious approach to a topic, slur at them with derogatory terms such as 'Serious Internet Space-Ship Captains'. I mean come on, a mon avis if you spend time on something, no matter how much you try and maintain a carefree attitude towards it, you will eventually develop an affinity for it and to some degree, adopt a more solemn attitude when conversing with players. Yes, we all understand that we're here to have fun and not take things over the 'top', but what is over the 'top'? When fun in itself is a hundred percent subjective? I dislike, frankly, hate people who take such an attitude, but that's just my thoughts on the topic, whats yours? |

EVE is not serious business and it's always more fun to joke and laugh.
Doesn't mean you can't accomplish your goals. All these people who laugh at people who act all serious business do serious stuff in EVE.
They just don't freak out when something goes wrong. Accept that you don't always win and work to your goals and you will do fine.
And if you don't have fun with it there is no point.

My opinion is that by asking what our opinions are on serious internet spaceships, you are taking internet spaceships too seriously.
Actually I'm not really sure what your asking for, but here's my opinion on the matter of seriousness. As long as YOU are having fun, take it as serious or un-serious as you want. Some people ENJOY digging in hardcore and making it serious business (some take that a little too far and make it their lives, but that's the extreme). Sure they may get upset at times and let it affect them outside the game, but that's the way they enjoy playing.
The important thing isn't how serious you take it, but to remember that not everyone takes it as seriously as you. You may get your pretty mission ship 'sploded by pirates who lol at you in local, and that may be very serious to you, but if you rage and tell them so, they'll only lol harder. Remember that it's a sandbox, and not -your- sandbox, and that is their way of playing. Turn around and start your serious missions (or mining, or anything else) somewhere else, but don't expect them to change one bit.
I hope I worded that right, tried to put my feelings about the game into a post that doesn't become a wall of text and make it understandable isn't easy, but there you go. |

You're doing it completely wrong. Sitting around waiting to do it will never get it done. If you want to be part of something bigger, then go out and be part of something bigger. |

well, like said, i'm an on and off player and i have outlined the fact that i am quite the novice, and most of your replies i respect, apart from the tards that strayed too far from the sacred halls of /b/. But then again, just because i'm asking this question, does it automatically imply that im a serious space ship captain or whatever the hell not? No, it is at it's entirety just a question of your opinion. As for the be part of something bigger thing, you actually can't and even if i could, like aforementioned, i couldn't participate effectively and please, i don't want a lecture |

There's 2 destinations taking this game very seriously generally seems to lead
1) Being the kind of guy who spends a lot of time stressing about killboard rank, and berating people in local for being "noobs" when they lose a fight to you.
2) Quitting in a rage because you either lost in-game fights, or got trolled out.
Neither of those seem fun to me, but to each their own. |

Overwording does not an intelligent poster make.
Everyone knows this is a game, but there is alot of investment and opportunity for loss here that it easily becomes important. Regardless if we consider Eve to be important, it is always entertaining to make fun of people who prioritise eve higher than us, or are performing better than us (and thus, we excuse our incompetence). |

In my first 4 months of playing, my corp of 3 friends (we all had started playing at the same time), did all sorts of crazy stuff that was pretty significant in the eve universe (especially considering we were 4 people). If you think you can't make a difference right now, then you're not thinking hard enough. |

Sorry mate I got bored reading your schpiel after about the first sentence due to a lack of paragraphs.
Anyone who takes so much time to post about other players attitudes on a game forum probably takes the game too seriously.
I hope that answer satisfies your question, 20 Million ISK can now be credited to my account in game, thank you. |

The appropriate level of seriousness for Eve is variable depending on the players involved.
If you want to play in the big leagues of the 0.0 wars, the level of seriousness should be similar to that of fairly serious amature sports (the type that is not profession, but still warrants a little time on major networks now and then....)
On the other end of the spectrum is the level of seriousness common to backyard football at a family cookout.
There are plenty of folks who seem to feel that NO ONE should treat Eve more seriously than family backyard football. They are wrong. No one should treat Eve as a profession (except CCP). But its fully legit to assign a level seriousness common to high level amature competition in sports.
The issue then, is to play at the level that YOU want to play at. A jounior member of a 0.0 alliance does not need to apply the same level of seriousness that the alliance leader does, but he sure needs to be more serious than the casual empire mission runner.

I will reply with my own wall of text:
I cannot take the game that serious anymore. Toward the beginning I was getting a little serious about things, then something happened which caused me to ragequit, but after spending a little time reflecting on EVE and its nature, I was back within 2 weeks with a renewed outlook toward the game. It is all simply pixels on a screen. Yeah we may put some time and effort into the game, but at the end of the day, it is still internet pixel ships and moneys, and not worth a whit. One day CCP will shut down EVE's servers (hopefully none too soon, but it will happen eventually), when this happens all your spacejunk and 1337 pilots will cease to matter even to CCP... |

I thought EVE alliances took **** seriously, which they do. However they pale in comparison to hard core raiders on WoW. |

Takes all types really. Sometimes it is fun to cut up and act like fools and die in a fuc!ing fire after a seriously poorly led leeroy, then laugh. Other times it is rather fun being a part of a well oiled murder machine that pushes in the sh!t of fools like its valentines day in prison. Everyone clicking, like a symphony. Then after, its cheers all around and a laugh. Your OP gives most mean guys a woody by the way. You better gather up tougher skin to do well in this game. Stop hating too, gives ulcers and will cause more internet spaceship humor at your expense. |
