Sorry for, what here, probably passes for a total Noob question, but here goes.

I am currently trained and flying a heavy tank/Cruise missle based Scorp Navy Issue which I love for missions. I also have a Raven Navy Issue that is my short range Torp boat/drone ECM, which I ame still getting used to. Again, so far just for missions. Both work great in their own respects.

However, Eve offers much more than mission running in boats that can take a beating and I am trying to figure out where to go from here. It seems that everything I look at (Command Ships/Heavy Assalt Ships my preference) I cant leverage my training as much to get me into a ship that will leverage these (heavy missles based training)usefully until I spend huge amounts of time training other weapon types to Tech II level play.

I know everyone has their opinions, but thoughts on ships to focus on would be a big help. I am tending toward a Vulture to at least leverage my Missile training till I can do more. I am most happy at range either assisting others or Sniping . Range = Good for me.

Thoughts?

Are you saying you want something that can utilise your heavy missile skills whilst you train for something else?
Are you specifically intent on railguns?
If so: Vulture, Eagle and Rokh are your next steps. Then perhaps some Gallante flavours; Eos and Astarte Otherwise its cross-training to another race, probably Minmatar. I suspect what you really need a Strategic Cruiser, but I can't advise on that.

You could try a HAM drake, or an ECM boat for small gangs. 1600mm Blackbird is popular. There is the Sniper Cerberus, Tengu and Seige Raven.

My Caldari List for PVP fun would be...

Griffen
Kestral
Crow
Hookbill
Manticore
Kitsune
Blackbird
Falcon
Cerberus
Navy Caracal
Tengu
Drake
Nighthawk
Scorpion
Seige Raven

If gun skills

Merlin
Harpy
Raptor
Moa
Eagle
Rokh
Vulture

Drones

Worm
Gila
Rattler

For more PVE

Ninja Ratting Manticore
Nighthawk
Tengu
Gila
Rattler

Hope this helps!

Yea, I am hoping to leverage my current heavy missile skill base in a Tech II boat until I get trained up for a more well rounded PvP type boat.

Was heavily focused on the Tengu, but man - the cost to set one up right is massive. And I expect to lose a few until I get skills where they should be.

Thus, took a look at Nighthawk, Vulture, Vagabond and Deimos.

Maybe the Cerb, as I flew a Caracal for a while. Just not as versitile a platform that allows for both support and kill roles.

Seem that the Vulture has the best tradeoff of potential with 5 hardpoints or 5 turrents.

I guess what I am also asking, is can a missile boat be really effective in non Mission roles?

Yes. Although you don't want to take an expensive missile boat (read: Nighthawk) into PvP unless you are sitting on a ton of money. You will lose ships in PvP as I'm sure you know. Try starting off with Kestrel/Caracal/Drake PvP.

Get your heavy missiles and shield skills up as high as you can. You will find that the missile ships perform well. If you're in a large fleet, aim for secondary targets.

The Tengu can excell in both PVP and PVE roles. it can be a logistics ship, i can be a command ship, it can do gank, it can do tank. Granted its not perfect at any role, but thats versatility for you. Is it any good? Watch some of the Alliance tournament videos and see for yourself
Alliance Tournament 8 Finals

The Cerb doesnt have the same ZOMGWTFBBQPWN apeal of the Tengu, but as a Missile Sniper and DPS support ship, it does a good job.

Got the Drake, which is a great boat, and the Caracal (bit light for my taste), and plan on expending them learning PvP.

What I want to get some focus on is the right Tech II ship to focus on, both training and build that will not require me to completely change my training path. I am heavily trained on Missles and their ancillary skills and Shield training. So in my Raven and Scorp I do big DPS and have big Tank. Have the same in the Drake. Also have passable Hybrid and Projectile turrent skills.

Thus, I am trying to determine what Tech II ships I should "realisticly" focus on. Hence, my focus on Heavy Assalt Cruisers and Command Ships. Everything I seem to fit out below that level ends up with less than 100 DPS.

Oh, dont get me wrong, the Tengu is a great ship. And I can train it up relatively quickly, but the build cost are astronimical.

I'd try this then: train everything for a maxed NH except for mindlinks and the actual CS skill. Then fly an absolutely awesome Drake. That ship scales so well it isn't even funny.

If not that, look at recons?

Edit: And unless you really, really like sitting in a safe spot doing nothing, don't go anywhere near a Vulture.

I like the Cerb build. That is getting me closer to what I was hoping for in a Tech II ship. Thanks.

Yes as I say it's good to excellent but not at close range rights. That doesn't play to any of it's advantages.

The only thing I'd change (when I get new ones) is a T2 anti-em rig as you can find a lot of EM dmg at long range (laz0rs, aka zealots) and the thermal/kinetic resists are already quite high.

i wouldn't count the tengu out so quickly. While it responds extremely well to pimping, you don't need it to start out. Yes its an expensive ship, but so are those 2 faction battleships, it'll be swing able for you to buy one. Orbit a wreck to keep your speed up. You'll find it will run missions at a surprisingly fast rate, and as you do grab up some navy ballistic controls one by one to further increase your isk/hour. Once thats done you can finally grab a pithi b and swap to augmented cap res for 6th launcher.

Perhaps I'm misleading you. The cerb fit is for PVP. I had the impression you were looking to branch out of PVE a bit...so use accordingly.
