As with all skills in the game a core skill is the one bearing the name of the skill tree and is often required at V to unlock other skills in its tree.
Secondary skill is a skill that has prerequisite in skill description.

a note of caution:

many new players to the game tend to hear everyone shouting about "train learning skills NOW!" and proceed to do that, all the while being bored out of their minds for the first month of the game because all they are doing is learning to train faster, they aren't learning to do or use anything new.

make sure you pepper your training queue periodically with stuff you want to do and stuff that will keep the game fun in between those learning skills.

also, there are usually 3 levels of "learning" that many people go for:
1x skills at level IV, 3x skills at level III
both sets of skills at level IV
or 1x skills at level V, and 3x skills at level IV

training those 1x skills to V will require 4-5 days each, so keep in mind that means you're essentially not advancing as an EVE character for about 20-25 days. Make sure, before you start those final 1x skills up to V, that you're quite happy doing what you're doing for a while (for example, if you've JUST started level 3 missions, or you've just gotten into a hulk for mining, etc.)

Some good advice in the posts above. I just started my first alt. The thing to remember is that the learning skills each increase an attribute, and the skill categories are pretty well broken up by attribute pairs. That is, if you're planning on doing some gunnery and spaceship command skills, you need to get your perception/willpower increasing skills up. If you're focusing on industry/science you mainly need to worry about memory/intelligence.

I got cybernetics to 4 so I could use some decent implants, then trained the learning skills as above to 3/3 and took about 3-4 days. Then, throw in the "practical skills and leave a learning skill at the end of the queue to get them done casually.

A word of warning that was pointed out to me regarding Evemon: If you're putting together a skill plan, the learning skills are only "suggested" by the application when the total net effect takes time off of the queue. So, if training say "Instant Recall" to four would shave 45 each minutes off of 3 planned skills, but training "Instant Recall" to 4 takes 136 minutes, it won't be suggested by the software. The problem is then if you go on to another skill plan with similar requirements, you still won't train "Instant Recall." So you could have saved 45min x 6 skills, but didn't because training the skill didn't benefit the individual plans. TL;DR- longer plans in Evemon are better when starting out as you'll get better suggestions for learning skill training.

again thanks for the advice.

at the mo ive got all learnings <except charisma ones> at lvl 4. plan on taking a couple to lvl 5. also decided to invest in the int/mem/will and perception +3 implants which will hopefully speed things up.

at the mo im planning to setup a pvp scout ship for use in 0.0 any suggestions on a fit for a tech 1 frig while i get some covert ops skills up <plan on using an anathema eventually>

When I started playing the first thing I done was use the 2x training time start you get up to 1.6M (I think) and done all basic 1x learning skills + cybernetics to 4, sold a GTC, bought all +4 then took all the 3x skills up to 3 and then basic learning skills to 5 and then the 3x to lvl 4. Done the same with a second account I started, well, didnt have to sell a GTC.

5/4 is overkill, to be honest. The amount you gain from that fifth point is going to be pretty close to negligible, even if you leave all of your attributes at 8 you're talking an increase of 1/25th training speed (assuming you have no implants whatsoever and no training in "learning" itself) which means three and a half months of training skills only with that primary attribute to break even on time invested, or seven months of training skills with that secondary attribute.

The 5th point is only really important if you're remapping in such a way that you have to use a "dump stat" as a primary or secondary a lot, like if you've mapped full int/mem but suddenly find you need to train missile command... that's a much more substantial fractional training increase.

That's not to say it's not going to pay for itself in the long run, but you're basically speeding up how fast you master flying a titan by delaying how soon you can fly a battleship/T2 cruiser (to use a ship-commanding example) significantly.
