Edited by: GodsVervloek on 26/08/2010 23:37:15 EVE and RSI's
I worked in IT for almost 8 years, luckily it wasn't behind a desk all the time so I never had any issues with RSI (Repetative Stress Injury, i.e. computer related injuries).
When I retired from IT, I started playing EVE. I spend about 3-4 hours a night on EVE, non-stop somedays.
Now, 3 years later, I have Ulnar Tunnel Syndrome in my left wrist (Carpal is the median nerve that effects thumb, point, and middle fingers. Ulnar effects the other 2 fingers), and "tennis\mouse" elbow in the right arm from too many mouse clicks and movements.
Please, take more breaks, correct your posture, massage your wrists, elbows, and related muscles before playing, during, and afterwards.
It hurts like hell, and will eventually prevent you from using the computer for more that a few minutes at a time.
Oh yeah, EVE time went from 4 hours a night to 30min a day and a lot of afk time ... RSI is serious s**t.
**Edit: Corrected RSI, I must be obessed with 'Syndrome', lol |

You mean "computers and RSI's". This has nothing to do with EVE specifically. |

Edited by: GodsVervloek on 25/08/2010 22:03:22 No, I am not blaming EVE or CCP. But the fact is that EVE has an insane amount of mouse clicks compared to other games I played, and I feel it's important that people know what can happen.
But you're right, it's not just EVE, but computer use in general, but seeing that people here all play EVE, it makes sense to talk about EVE-related RSI's instead of just general\work-related computer use.
And I'm not touching PI with a ten-foot pole! lol |

I had to almost completely stop PI because of the same issue. My arm started hurting since few days past Tyrannis (got a dozen of planets) and I am to go to the medician to see if I can avoid surgery to cure PI induced Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. |

Same here. Utterly quit PI and left everything sitting mid-process. Let my POS run out of fuel. Bought Starcraft II, haven't annoyed myself with Eve since. |

Sounds like you've been doing something wrong. Either that, or you're prone to the condition.
You are right about massaging, though. Also it is very good to stretch. |

Maybe if you had used a ten foot pole in the first place, you wouldn't have had this problem. |

I've never understood the problem with PI. Yes, it has more clicks than it should, but doing invention or market orders or anything has the same amount of clicking... |

Let me get this straight, you quit PI and Eve to prevent needing carpal tunnel surgery later. And bought Starcraft II instead? |

I used to have ulnar nerve damage in my left hand. At one point it got so bad I went to the dotctor and he had me wear a hand/wrist brace.
I eventually figured out that it was how I slept and so only wore it while sleeping.
I then changed how I slept and it went away. It still pops back up from time to time if I sleep on it wrong. |

If you think EVE has excessive clicking I guess you've never played Diablo.... Originally by: GodsVervloek I spend about 3-4 hours a night on EVE, non-stop somedays
I bolded the part you did wrong. Non-stop anything is gonna ruin you. |

Eve has many poorly designed sections of UI that specifically create strain. The UI creates undue stress for users which is not necessary and can be avoided with more attention to usability and accessibility. These interfaces are not the best they can be. |

Small remark: RSI stands for Repetitive Strain Injury, not Repetative Stress Syndrome
And yes, good advice to take off time to relax. Some games have warnings build in that you've played for xxx many hours.

I can't comment on other games, I only play EVE, but yeah, I thought my posture was fine and didn't quite believe that constant mouse clicking could cause RSI. Big surprise there, lol.
The Ulnar Syndrome started from my left hand resting on a gel pad in front of the keyboard, the soft gel doesn't help if your hand rests on the same spot without moving.
Playing the market eventually has the same effect as PI.
Anyways, I hope this thread makes people aware of potential issues, and that this can happen after weeks, months, and years.
