Whose great idea was it to extend downtime on a Friday night for maintenance tasks? That is peak playtime for New Zealand, Australia and several other countries. As it is we always have to put up with DT during our peak playtime, but we have learned to live with that. Now we have yet another extended DT in our peak time....
I'm all for improving the performance of eve in general, but must it all be at the expense of one time zone?
Does this maintenance have to be done on a Friday and could all of us in this part of the world please have a reduced subscription fee considering we can't play as much as we would like?
</end vent>
Someone has to take the shaft on the downtime. Congratulations, its you. |

Quote: They do DT when they do, because they have all the staff and resources available at that time (like I stated). That's the only reason DT is when it is, and as I've said three times now, all the info is available on the forums. You'll have to search for it though.
What I am saying is CCP should change that time so DT doesn't happen at 9PM for us Aussies. I'm sure "all the resources and staff" are available at less inconvenient times.
You're forgeting a few things here. Iceland is a small country and until recently CCP was a very small company with technical teams based ONLY in Iceland so having the manpower to perform DT whenever they (or you) prefer is probably not as trivial as you might think. Also the cluster itself is located near London so again, midday GMT is most favourable for them in terms of manpower and expertise available to deal with any issues. Additionally, performing it in the middle of their working day has another obvious advantage. They have plenty of time either side of DT to prepare for it (in the mornings) and also make any fixes (in the afternoons) before the EU and US peak-times arrive. The work they do (aside from the DT itself) can also require the involvement of people outside the "Daily Maintenance Team" (e.g. liasing with a team of coders to release a new bug fix or extra functionailty etc) so you need to have them available - which is the case during normal working hours. Ultimately, it comes down to the fact that CCP do it when it's most convenient for themselves, partially because they're selfish (and why shouldn't they be) but mostly because they have to due to real world constraints (such as staff/equipment availability and running costs). This way they can ensure that DT is as smooth as possible and the game suffers minimal disruption which benefits us all in the end as DT is a daily occurence so the possibility of daily disruptions would be bloody annoying to say the least. Now that CCP is growing rapidly, with offices in the USA and China we can perhaps expect 100% round-the-clock maintenance in years to come which that might allow for a move to a variable DT. |

As said above, CCP are EU based, their technician employees are available just in certain times.
Plus there is another factor: the downtime perfom TONS of scheduled tasks, bound to alter their results depending on when you do the DT. So much that the DT is always at the same hour regardless of daylight changes or whatever.
Now, with large efforts those batch operations could indeed be changed but:
1) It's not free, time is money 2) It's super-mega-ancient code and you KNOW what happens with that code when you just look at it. 3) The two above would make it unfeasible to rotate downtime "turns" across timezones.
A convergence of all of the above leads to the decision that someone got to get the shaft, and they are the minority (as usual) |

Steve Irwin was a pain in the butt when flying to Australia, within 1 hour of arriving in AU airspace he would come on, and spout off about bio diversity and hold a Koala in a dirty way.
And on Subject, Why should DT be moed just for you? I dont want DT in the afternoon thank you. |

No it is not. At 12:00 UTC it is 9 pm Australia time. 10 pm in Japan etc. If they brought forward the downtime to 9:00 UTC it will hit Australia at 6pm japan 7 pm. There is no country east of Australia with a substantial population (Sorry NZ). Therefore, they should bring the downtime forward by 3 hours. That will open up millions of potential players. |

It's legal issues. I don't know why, because law is stupid.
no, its just laziness, i have seen several comps in the past from us based companies that have allowed kiwis and aussies to enter, so clearly its not that big an obstacle.also, im sure some local companies here in nz and aus would be willing to help sponsor a comp, if thats what is required. heck, even a comp to win a single plex would show they at least know we exsist. or even a post to say they will look at ways they can bring us comps would suffice. but instead we get nothing but silence |

You know what you can do in that one or two hours? - Food - Another game, Minecraft or BF BC2 ;) - Tuck your kids into bed - Have a cigarette or two - Oh look tv (although aussie tv is quite ****, to be frank) - Have a breath of fresh air. - Have a glass of wine/beer/spirit.
p.s. whos going to be Prime Minister. Why can't we abstain or have a vote of no confidence? I have a feeling that Abbott is going to win. Bring back John Howard, or at least K-Rudd.

How did this thread get back to the top?
Its not going to change. Ask your eemployer to change your hours from 9 - 5 to 11 - 7. Then do your usual get home from work stuff and play eve from the end of Downtime till 1am
We all know that playing at the end of downtime is awesome. |

Of course not. Just look at the rules for the current CCP competition. Anybody outside of North America/Europe doesn't exist. Quote: 2. ELIGIBILITY: The "EVE Online Universal Glory Sweepstakes" (the "Promotion"), brought to you by CCP North America, Inc. (the "Sponsor"), will be governed by these "Official Rules". This Sweepstakes is applicable and open to legal residents of North America and Europe who are thirteen (13) years of age or older.
If CCP doesn't think Aussies/New Zealand players are significant enough to allow us to enter their competitions, then why do you think they would move downtime out into the middle of the ocean to inconvenience any whales playing Eve Online. Aussies, just live with it, Downtime is going to be in our prime time, end of story. |

This. Plus Downtime is also dictated around working hours for the people who run the server in London and carry out all these tasks/upgrades/etc. |
