Just had to jump out of a L3 mission room 10 seconds in because of a few missiles... Embarassed (I tried twice, the second time knowing to activate everything right away. They still got through my shields and 75% of my armor in about 15 seconds)

Is the Brutix just bad at PvE? Is there an actual fit that would work? I'm using 200mm guns, so hitting anything that's close is nearly impossible, but usually only light ships get close. The heavy hitters are over 30+ KM away, I can't even hit them on a prayer with the 200mm railguns (21KM is my max effective range I've noticed).

Should I try and fit my Brutix (again), or should I buy a new BC. (Which in turn would cause me to push back buying a hulk)

Thanks,

Robert

EDIT:

Judging by the comments I think I'll be racking my brutix until I get into a lot more PvP. I'll most likely be going for a Drake, but for now I'm going to work with mining :D

brutix is very capable. your fit is probably just a failfit and you are likely not tanking the right damage type.

you need to research info about the missions you are running and resist that type of damage.

second, blasters. railguns are horrible.
third, MWD. that takes care of most of the issue with blaster range.
use rigs. rigs are a critical part of most ships these days and you won't get by on a naked brutix.

HI
7x heavy ion blaster II or best named t1

MIDS
mwd
web
cap recharger II or best named

LOWS
2x Rat-specific damage type armor hardeners... t2 or best named
Medium armor repairer.. t2 or best named

for a newb id recommend 3x CCC rigs as that will cover almost all of your cap issues.

for the rest of the lows you will want to swap in "main" damage type hardeners if you need more tank, and swap out the main damage type hardeners for t2 or best named magnetic field stabilizers if you need less tank and more gank

That should be suitable for your purposes. With cap skills to 5, it's fully stable with AB running. If you don't have maxed cap skills, don't perma run the AB.

Tanks 327 DPS vs. Guristas (assuming Guristas do 70%Kin and 30%therm damage..) Switch hardeners depending on mission.

It deals 420 DPS, which really isn't great. I'd reccommend getting another BC, but if you absolutely must use a Brutix...

MWDs don't work in missions, blasters will still have ****ty range. Use Railguns.

MWD doesn't work in the vast majority of missions.

Yeah, not bad. If you wanted to trade a bit of tank for a bit of gank (and a lot of range) you could try this (very grid intensive; I'd forgotten that if someone were asking they probably wouldn't have AWU5):

MWDs don't work in all missions. Although they do work well with blasters when they work. In general, though, just plan to use a rail setup.

Or you could do the truly logical thing and just get a Dominix. (Fake edit: or a Drake. Or even a Hurricane or Harbinger. But no, not a Myrmidon.) But that probably isn't the advice you want to hear.

Even with good skills, the Brutix is challenging as a mission ship. Use your drones to get the close-in and standoff rats. Otherwise fit a solid tank and a lot of cap recharge. Recommend at least 2 cap control circuits in the rig slots.

Another thing to consider is combat tactics. Do you sit still and shoot or are you always moving? You should always be close to top speed to reduce inbound damage. When I find my tank is taking a beating it's because my velocity is 0 - doh! Find a wreck to orbit at 5km if nothing else.
