I used to play some older space mmo where the Russian smileys also never had eyes (like errr 10 years ago). I always assumed they would use the : that seperated the character name from the message as eyes.
> )))))))))))))
Might mean they're constantly angry next to happiness or sadness. It could be a mix of anger and something else? |

That's efficiency, you recognize it as a smiley even without ":"
So why type it then?

Differences in emoticons seem to be culturally based. Look here for the opposite example: http://www.livescience.com/health/070510_facial_culture.html
tl;dr: Japanese focus on the eyes to check for emotions, Americans mostly on the mouth, but the eyes still seem very important thus are in the emoticons. Russians just seem the opposite extreme to Japanese and do away with the eyes altogether in emoticons. |

This. The only reason the smiles are )))))) not :):):):):) is because the russian layout doesnt have ':' on it. |

All the russian fanmail I get tends to be filled with anger and/or vauge threats about broken kneecaps (apparently the russian mafia knows where I live?), and punctuated with "))))))". So I always assumed that "))))))" was supposed to be "!!!!!!!" but due to different language settings/keyboard layouts it showed up as ")" instead of "!". If ")))))" really is a smiley in russian, then I don't think a smile from them means what we think it means |

Interesting question actually. Apparently it has something to do with layout of Russian keyboard and ergonomics of typing. I often find that it is faster to switch to English layout and then back to Russian just to type “ :) ”. And when I cant be bothered with switching I just type )))). |
